If you assault something but it dies during the assault phase before your unit attacks it, does that unit count as assaulting; can they assault a different unit?

After you make your assault moves you can not make another assault move in that same assault phase.

Cleansing Flame I guess? Since it occurs before weapons are used. That might be what he meant...

Agreed with above, there shouldn't be anything left to resolve when it comes time to assault. As such, you pick your assault targets, move units in, etc. If a unit you choose to assault then somehow gets wiped out before amy blows are struck, you still assaulted that unit and (one way or another) wiped them out. Roll to consolidate, move to next assault, etc.

Can you give us a specific example of how a unit was killed after an assault charge but nefore any blows were struck?

He's probably playing wrong, making each unit move then resolve an assault instead of having all units make assault moves at once.

I've definitely seen people play this way before and had to correct them.

The only time I could see that happening (if you're playing the correct way as Ostrakon stated) is using Purifying Flame...however PF counts towards combat resolution so it occurs during the assault really, not before.

How?? The explosion would have been S3, no way to even glance another vehicle.
