I've been collecting models for quite awhile and now I want to actually play the game and I was wondering if I just need the Rulebook or do I need to get a codex? I have marines by the way.

You need both. You can kind of make do with out the big rule book. But you really do need the codex for your army. That way you can make your army list and know what your different units can do. The rule book can come second as long as you know/ can find someone who is willing to teach the game to you.

You need the rulebook to find out the basic rules of the game. Each codex contains the rules for that given army. You only need the codex of the army you're playing though.

My advice is learn your codex and weapon stats off by heart to save time in-game.

You absolutely need the Codex. You need the rulebook, but you can pickup the mini-rulebook that comes with AOBR really cheap on eBay. It has all the rules, but none of the modelling/background stuff that the big Rulebook has. You'd also need templates and dice.

Considering that the rules are due to be updated in the middle of next year, I'd pick up the mini one on eBay rather than spend money on the big one.

Of course, if you actually wanted to buy the AOBR set, you'd also get all the 'quick start' stuff, which is a really useful tool when you're learning. It depends if you want the extra models or not...

Go to one of the stores and start talking with the Gamer's and express interest about the game. Chances are you might run into some fun helpful people. People that will give you a good idea what to get and how to make a good starting force. Even a good 500 point game can get ya going. And thats roughly what you get out of aobr starter set. You could always trade a player for marines with the Orks in the set lol after all any Orks player can never have enough boyz.
