Ive been reading alot of threads talking about running a kan wall, and i have tried to run it myself. But I think Ive been doing it wrong, and was wondering if anyone could explain to me in detail how Im supposed to run the formation, that would help me out quite a bit.

Make a wall of kanz in front of your infantry squads, which grants them 4+ cover to shooting coming through the kanz.
Put a pair of Big Meks behind the wall, which grants all kanz within KFF range 4+ cover.
Advance, pummelling the enemy with the kanz, while the boyz mobs are protected behind them Automatically Appended Next Post: What details would youm like, to expand on ?
I like rokkit kanz, for example, whereas Grotzooka Kanz are also popular..

The OP is asking for on-board strategies, not for advice on list building.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

To paint then? OK basically you set up like this. The smart thing is to have the BigMeks within coherency with a boyz unit, so they cant be singled out. And you cover the Kans as such. Again, this is basically it, terrain and things of that nature can screw with your lines, but thats something you just have to figure out how to play along with.

Your basic set-up should look something like this:
K K K K K K K K K
:::: KFF:::::::::: KFF
::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::
^ Lots of Boyz
The KFFs are obviously joined in the squads of boyz and should actually be in the 2nd or 3rd 'rank' of your mobs so that when they charge into the assualt you can have them hang back a bit and not fight. Getting the KFF killed obviuosly is a bad thing ans should be avoided.
With this set-up you have several options going into the game. If it is an objective based game with lots of objectives spread around the middle of the map, all you need to do is march up and take as much terriotry and hold it for the rest of the game and win by board control. Annilation is slightly more tricky as a quicker opponenet will just keep you at range and "kite" you around the board. Being able to corner him or cut his army in two will help greatly as you hammer the center of the board with your massive metal wall.
The biggest issue I've had running the wall though, is keeping all the Kanz, KFFs, and boyz going at maximum speed. A bad roll of the Run dice can hold up your entire formation is the Kanz roll low, and the boyz roll high. Heck even standing and shooting with the Kanz too early can halt your entire advance and can cause more damage to your strategy than the benefits of firing a few rokkits at an enemy skimmer. Keep your Kanz moving and mobile until end game then let the rokkits and grotzookas fly before a great charge!
Another problem is is the wreckage wall that will tend to accumulate throughout the game. Due to squadrons automatically turning immobilized results into wrecks will generate alot of extra terrain directly in front of your boyz forcing you to go around. It can work well if the kans die in front of an objective so you have some cover, but the majoirty of my experience is that it is quite a hassle. Running your boyz in mobz of 20 instead of 30 helps elivate the manuevering troubles, but in exchange they far more vulnerable to template weapons.
My last thought on the kan wall is on just that, the wall part. This army type is a strange mash-up of a vehicle spam list and green tide, but the green tide tends to not work that well. Since I started running this type of list several months ago I've successfully gotten my boyz mobs to assualt maybe 2-3 times. Most of the time they get caught up in difficult terrain, or end up sitting on an objective for the rest of the game. Shootas are an absolute must for this type of army, and in my experience the list should be played as a slow moving shooting list rather than a massive assualt list. Kans though powerful aganst your bread and butter infantry are easily countered by lots of things like assualt termies, monsterious creatrues, and anything with a power fist. Move them up until you have the objectives or great field position for your shootas and let the dakka fly!
Actually the more I think of it, maybe lots of stormboyz would be a better match for a kan wall. Being able to 'hop' over the wall to get the charge and have the kanz mop up in a 2nd wave may have more synergy for an assualt list than the current hybrid green tide list.

Ok thanks for the replies, i see now that its more like a phalanx type thing. The main thing i was doing wrong was assaulting, what im hearing is that this is a shooty strategy, and you assault to finish the other team off. i have some deff coptas to run with this list as well that should help.

I have seen it done and it works well. In the most current edition, care was taken to remove rules that made the kan wall in the last ork codex broken (rules with the mek boyz force field). In a campaign me and a friend i had a alliance with in the campaign had 4000pts of dark angels and space wolves facing down 2000 points ork kan wall. Me and my friend were slaughtered to a man. worst beat for me in a long time. it was also before the closed the games workshop store in st. louis.

Yea Kan Wall can be quite powerful, especially is the KFF dice are rolling your way. The biggest factor is too play for Kanz smart and don't just assualt them into anything!

That's why I keep a couple Deff-Dreads on hand to assault anything that gets close to the Kans!
