Me and my friends are new to the game and have a question about our game tonight. lets say there is a unit of 4 identical mobs that can take three wounds each, one has take two already. That unit suffers one instant kill, can that be allocated to the model with two wounds already or must if be put on one of the other two.

The instant kill is placed on an unwounded mob. You can't "waste" the Instant Death on a previously wounded model (pg. 26).

Not entirely true. When do these wounds happen? If it is in one turn of shooting a guy gets knocked down a few wounds, and then in the next shooting phase there is an ID attack (demolisher cannon or what have you) then you can allocate it to whoever you want (like the wounded guy)

If its combat, then that's a different kettle of fish

Incorrect. You can allocate wounds causing instant death wherever you want. Once the wound causing Instant Death for whatever becomes an unsaved wound(after you failed your save, or if you can't take saves), you remove an unwounded model(if possible) as casualty among those which are identical in game terms to the model the wound was allocated to. So if you allocate wounds to a wounded nob and there is no other nob with the same gear, you can waste instant death on a wounded model. Only if there are multiple identical models suffering the instant death wound, you are forced to remove unwounded models first.

It's really the same for combat and shooting.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Well combat has the issues of initiative and all that, which could confuse some people

The OP specified that the models taking an instant death wound were all identical.

You can still allocate the wound to a wounded nob.
Instant death would still force you to remove an unwounded nob as casualty, but allocation is not affected.

the wound was taken on a previous turn, and the instant kill was the only would taken by that unit on the current turn.

It doesnt matter.

Instant Death rules force you remove Unwounded Models from the Group of like models; if you have a unit of identical models then an unwounded one WILL be removed.
