Subject: What are your thoughts on the Annihilation Barge? In game and value for money model?

Boom! Leman Russ Commander
|
I already have a massive Necron Army (4000 points in the old dex), and my first new model was the Annihilation Barge/Command Barge Hybrid kit.
I have to say that this kit is pretty good value for money if built as an Annihilation Barge as you then get a Necron Overlord in the box. So basically an AI tank and a character for £20.50.
But in game, does it work as good as I think it does?
Lets look at it's main weapon...
Basically 2 twin linked autocannon minus the AP, at a 24" range. Not a bad gun, but a little lacking in the range department. Pretty good at taking out Rhinos and DE Raiders?
Now the rest of the tank...
It's main weakness is not it's armour (13 all round until it takes a penetrating hit, then it moves to 11), it's the Barge's lack of Speed.
So my question to you Necron playing Dakkanites is should I build the kit as the Annihilation Barge or as the Command Barge?

I honestly might end up getting both... an Overlord on a Command Barge can do nasty things to enemy vehicles.
The Annihilation Barge has:
Tesla Cannon/Gauss Cannon
Twin-Linked Tesla Destructor
Quantum Shielding
While I haven't tried taking one yet, I plan to as soon as I get my Barge kit in. If I do end up taking it, it'll likely be primarily due to the Twin-Linked Tesla Destructor.
4 shots, Tesla (2 additional hits on a 6), S7 AP -, reroll misses, roll a d6 for every unit within 6" of target, on a roll of 6 unit takes d6 S5 AP - hits - nothing to sneeze at.

Can you possibly make both kits? Using Earth magnet set up you might be able to.
Good array of weapons on the Annihilation barge, str 7 re rolling to hit, 6's causing additional hits. If you run Nemesor (love this HQ choice) you can give this Barge "Tank hunter " as well each turn (plus you get Nemesor on foot with the kit...)
As far as command barge, It was recently pointed out to me, that the sweeping attacks can even be made while moving flat out... so you get a 4+ invul on top of Quantun shielding ant what not. (not my ideal way to utilize an overlord, but def one that cant be totally ignored as an option)
Ill be getting this model for the fact that it simply looks great. Doom Scyth and monolith are superior choices IMO, but cost.... I also like the Spiders appose to an annihilation barge as well. But again thats just my opinion. And everyone play style is different, at least some of it anyway.

I'm honestly not sure how well the tesla gun would be for hunting DE vehicles.
Speaking from a DE perspective, I've gotten so used to adding +1 to the vehicle damage chart, that when I play other armies I often get corrected by my opponent when I say 'oh my vehicle has been such and suched.'
The AP - would balance out the +1 from my open topped vehicles. So you'd be rolling on the vehicle damage chart like they were regular vehicles, which would add a fair deal to their survivability. Don't get me wrong, you'd be able to get reliable penetrating hits with it, but you wouldn't be swatting them out of the sky like every other race out there.
Food for thought. Not trying to discount it as a whole, just interject another view point on it.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I'm building one of the kits right now. The instructions say that you can just set the guns or the lord & control pannel in without glue, allowing you to swap back and forth. I've dry fit the control pannel and it seems that would work, but it feels like the tesla guns have too much weight forward to stay put without glue or magnets. If you went with magnets you'd need some really small ones (1/6" diameter and 1/16" tall). I'm going to go with a fixed Annihilation barge as I want the lord on foot model.

I'm currently building mine and I may have run into an unforseen problem:
My Overlord needs his base like all models, but I'd also like him to stand in the Barge when necessary. So for those that know, if I glue the base to the Overlord does he still fit in nicely into his barge? I rather not have to go through the trouble of magnetizing if I can help it.
Edit: I found the answer elsewhere and it looks like he fits, so ignore this post
