I'm new to Imperial Guard and currently are fitting out some heavy weapon and special weapon squads. I have spare plasma and meltaguns from previous marine tactical squads and the scopes from these i could use to make snipers. In the hands of this unit, which one is the most effective at medium to long range (sniper, plasma or GL) and which one is the most effective at close range (meltaguns, flamers or detpacks)?
Also, with regard to heavy weapon teams, are mortars worth considering for long range anti-personnel?

On moon miranda.

For medium range, honestly the unit isn't spectacular in this range band. With GL's the unit is cheap and effective against some units, probably the best bet, not too bad for 50pts but not amazing either. Sniper rifles are unfortunately awful. Plasma guns are too expensive IMO on such a unit with only BS3 and very likely to kill themselves.

For short range, Flamers are excellent, 50pts for 3 flamers is awesome and the BS3 isn't an issue. Melta's aren't awful, but variable given the BS3. Demo charges can be useful but you really need to get them a delivery system.

With HWS's, mortars are...ok, but HWS's in general are rather pricey for the firepower they offer and they're very easy to kill off.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

For sws 3x flamer all the way anything else the bs is too low or they are too easily killable for the amount of points.

For hws IMO there are 3 ways to run them and they each have their advantages and disadvantages.

1. 3x mortars: dirt cheap way to hit alot of units and due to the rules if the first hits the others scatter from there which means you could but 9-12 hits in a single squad at 48". Of course low strength and pinning almost never works.

2. 3x HB: this gives you the ability to have a pretty good chance to force a failed leadership roll per turn on guard equivelent . Against space marine equivalent or better they aren't going to do much. Shortish range.

3. 3x AC: great transport killer, instant kills guard equivalent, makes space marine equivalent take lots of saving throws. If first shot kills transport the rest are wasted, space marines tend to make their Saving throws.
