Let's say that it's a given 6th edition is this summer and necrons were written for this new edition. Why start a new army now when no one is really sure what is coming? What seems super fantastic now may be garbage in 6 months time.

They write the codexes with backward compatability in mind. Sure they may be a bit weaker than the newer codexes, but they still work. See 4th edition tau, eldar et al.

Some people collect an army because they want to collect the army, not because of how it performs.

These people would buy a Necron army now because, well, they want to buy them.

Because if you aren't playing in tournaments your codex doesn't need to be the most competitive ever, just fun. Because for people who don't play in tournaments aesthetics and fluff are much bigger concerns then being a top tier codex on the tabletop.
Because people who play the Necrons have been waiting for a new codex for years, what difference does the new edition make?

And for those who do play in tournaments the Necrons were written with 6E in mind and will likely have a leg up on the rest of the 5E codexes until the 6E codexes come out.

And since 99% of players DON'T play in tournaments...

On the flip side, what works reasonably well, may work INSANELY well come 6th edition - rumored change with rapid fire getting its 2 shots at 24" if a person doesn't move and 1 shot at 24" if they do move would be amazing for warriors so I don't see a downside then.

Also based on what weapons does, you can somewhat gauge what will be effective from this edition to the next.

Well if that is the case, why start Space Wovles, or Grey Knights, or Blood Angels, or Dark Eldar, or Imperial Guard then? We don't know how 6th edition will treat them.

So what is your point? I do not understand. You mean someone should start another army beside Necrons before 6th edition? Couldn't this be said for all codicies then?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

By that same logic I shouldn't buy anything for any of my armies until 6th drops. Just roll with the punches, it's all you can do.

The Newcron codex was designed with 6th edition in mind, so I don't see any problem with it. As said some people collect the army for the aesthetics, conversion potential, paint schemes, etc. and the background.

Im sure tons of people can care less about the rules. Not like GW will cripple their shinny new product right?

So yes, new minis comes first

I was mostly thinking of the bandwagon types, not the longtime necron players. I got rid of my necrons a long time ago because they were so boring, so I'm glad they got a cool new book. Not many people played Grey Knights before their new codex, now they are everywhere. Same with space wolves and blood angels. I have never played against necrons in a tourney before, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna be popping up everywhere now. So I guess I'm just directing this to people who are starting brand new armies.
