Mindless Spore Mine

Ok, there's probably a really easy answer to this that I'm missing in the main rulebook. I was pretty sure there was a rule that you had to take the best save possible at the time, meaning that the lychguard can only use their shields to bounce back anything with an Ap of 3 or less.
Am I right in this or is this a rule that doesn't exist? If so can the lychguard choose to forgo their 3+ basic save against, say, bolters for only a 4+ invun. but with saves bouncing back?
Thanks.

No you'll have to take that 3+ save as its your best but on the other hand small arms fire isn't going to be as bad for these guys with T5, a 3+ and reanimation protocol . You'll still bounce back anti tank weapons ... which is going to be fun

I thought so, but I can't actually find a rule that states that. Could you qoute it please?
I know they can weather small arms fire very well with their 3+, but they may be close to a large squad of enemies, say guard, that can't, in which case it may be beneficial to lower their number with their own shots.
If there is no rule in the BRB that actually states that you MUST take your best save (I will concede if someone can qoute it as I may simply be missing it) I would assume you can take whichever save you want, which in most cases would obviously be the best one possible.

I thought the shield just said that any successful save bounced the shots back, which would include armor saves, not just the 4+ invuln from the shields.

"A Lychguard with a dispersion shield has a 4+ invulnerable save. If this save is made against a shooting attack ..."Unless its the 4+ you're not making that reflection.

I see. Kinda makes it less dangerous in some ways and more in others.

It's also a possible indication that in 6th, you'll be able to choose which save you take. It opens the way for this interesting new mechanic (take a lower save for a different bonus).
