I've always loved the Necrons and have considered starting a Necron army for a long time. Now with the new models and codex, I have to do it. Unfortunately, money is a little tight. So, I need to find the most cost efficient way to get a good start on a necron army. What should I buy? To start off with, I'll have about $200 (that's American dollars). Not including the codex (which I'm getting as a gift), what should I spend my money on?

I'm sure I'll need a box of warriors for 1 troop choice, but what about the other? Should I get another box of warriors, or should I get Immortals?
For HQ, should I just buy an Overlord, or is it worth it to get a command barge, since you get an overlord and the barge for only like $15 more?

What are your suggestions?

Since I am building my own army and am in a similar boat this is my army list suggestion to you...
HQ:
Trayzan the Immortal
(then slowly build your Royal Court)
Command Barge
Troop:
2 Warriors
1 Immortals
Elite:
2 Triarch Praetorians
1 Deathmark

After that I would plan on buying a couple of Annihilation Barges and then bolster your elites with some Lychguard. Also for your Royal Court you can look at either going the Necron Lord route or load up on Crypteks....
From the looks of it don't over do it cause they haven't released everything yet but good luck and happy killing !!!

Depends on what tactic you want to use.

Warrior spam looks strong, as does Scarab Spam (which is good as they accompany warriors in their boxes).

I'm going for:

x1 Overlord
x1 Cryptek
x1 Triarch Praetorian Squad
x1 Immortal Squad
x1 Deathmark Squad
x2 Warrior Squad
x1 Doomsday Ark
x1 Ghost Ark
x1 Annihilation Barge
x1 Monolith

By deathmark box and a warrior box. You can make 5 Deathmarks, 5 immortals with tesla and 5 with blasters by doing a little converting. Instead of having to buy three boxes of warriors to get five of each. Do this twice and you have ten deathmarks and twenty immortas with both tests of guns. Saves you a bit.
