So I've been collecting 40K for a while now but I've never created an army list or played a game. I've finally found some friends that play and I'm starting to create an Imperial Guard list for 1000 points.

I'd like to avoid heavy mech because of cost issues (for the models at least, the points cost is quite attractive)

What I'm wondering is if this list is too gimmicky. I've only got 2 troops options and everything is fairly close range - shotguns, flamers and meltas are all 12'' preferably less for meltas.

This is my current list - it's not competitive by any means but it seems fun to play.

CCS, HF and 2x meltagun, astropath

Vet Squad, shotguns, 2x melta

Vet Squad, shotguns, 2x melta, demolitions (rides in Valkyrie)

Stormtroopers, 2x flamer

2x Scout Sentinel, 2x ML

Hellhound, HF, Smoke Launcher

Valkyrie, MMPod, HB Sponsons

Leman Russ Vanquisher, EA, Camo Netting

Should be 1000 on the nose.

I'm really new to this whole list-building thing and would appreciate any advice I can get. My friends play drop assault vanilla Marines, a Nids army that's pretty well-balanced between gribblies and big 'uns, and footslogging Orks. I'm a little worried about CC getting to me so I've got some nice flamer templates, but the prospect of a podding ironclad or rogue Carnifex has me taking plenty of meltas. Am I doing it right?

The lack of troops is a bit worrysome.....that and you have melta squads on foot which are pretty useless honestly. Mech them up or they won't do anything.

CCS, HF and 2x meltagun, astropath

HF is never worth the cost. If you want heavy flamers, take chimeras. Not sure why you have an astropath in here. You're list doesn't really need one.

If you take melta, they need a transport.

Vet Squad, shotguns, 2x melta

I'd pick up a third melta for each squad. Also the first needs a transport.

Personally I'd advise against shotguns. There is almost never a situation where you want to charge. Honestly you want the enemy to charge you so when he kills you in his turn you can shoot him in yours.

I'd get at least one more troop choice.

Stormtroopers, 2x flamer

I'd drop them. Flamers are wasted on them and they don't really become worth it until about 1750.

2x Scout Sentinel, 2x ML

Multilasers or autocannons only.

Hellhound, HF, Smoke Launcher

Not a bad choice. A hull MM would work too.

Valkyrie, MMPod, HB Sponsons

Since you lack the ranged AT, I'd go with a vendetta. Usually sponsons aren't that great, but if you have the points to spare, why not.

Leman Russ Vanquisher, EA, Camo Netting

Vanquishers sucks. Find your AT elsewhere. A standard russ or a demolisher would work better in your list. Never take EA....waste of points.

Camo netting doesn't make much sense here. How are you planning on getting a cover save in the first place? You don't have much in this list that can help you out in that regard.
