The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Also alerted friends over FB, although people don't tend to acknowledge anything I say, so it's their own fault if they get fethed over
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

If they got the forums, it's concievable that they could get Steam itself.

All information currently released only suggests a forum hack. Apparently people who tried to get to the forums were redirected. The forums are on a separate server hub and hijacking the forums and the accounts there leaves the possibility of attacking Steam main miniscule.
Right now, the hack actually just seems to me to be a rebuttal of VAC and anti-hacking services. It honestly looks to me like a prank.

Of course. Especially if the passwords are the same or similar.
Yeah, here's the message on the boards at the moment:
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:
Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.
We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.
We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.
While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.
We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.
We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.
I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.
Gabe.
Personally I'm not worried at all. Although the forums are down, Steam buying / trading / games updating / etc are still working, I think that's a very good sign that the Steam service itself is more than likely fine.
In addition to that, Steam's security measures were way better than Sony's, and I don't recall any stories of actual fraudulent charges or identity theft when that went on, sooo...
Still, it's annoying that the forums are still down ( I was trying to trade for Skyrim! ;__; ) and this will probably have some negative publicity on Valve, but nothing they cannot overcome.
All this hacking stuff that seems to be getting in the news more and more is just really annoying, another example of humans being dicks.
Presumably these people are pretty smart, since they can hack into things, I'm guessing I couldn't just go and hack into the PSN in a few mins this afternoon if I wanted some credit card numbers. So why don't these people gets jobs, designing computer stuff (I think some of them probably do) rather than trying to steal people's details...
Having never used the forums at all I didn't know if it was a separate account with the same name or if your whole steam ID set is used for the account.
