Hi All
Big apologies for being thick, but if you charge a unit with an attached character, do you have to be in base to base with the character to attack them?

Yes.
EDIT: Page 49 of the Rulebook under 'Independant Characters & Assaults' explains this.

Thanks for the reply! Just to clear things up then, a mob of ork boyz (10) charge 3 BA marines with one character attached (4). Let's say that the boyz go in and three of them are in base contact with the character, so I take it 7 boyz will direct their attacks against the marines and the other 3 will spank (try to!) the character?

It depends on whether any other the remaining 7 boyz are within 2" of a boy in B2B with the character (as shown in the diagram on the same page I mentioned). If they are not, then only the 3 boyz can attack the IC (although they may choose to attack the squad if they are able).

To attack a unit you need to be in btb with it, or within 2" of a model from your unit and also not in btb with another enemy unit.
This applies whatver the unit is.

and remember that a character has to be In BTB with another model when he is attached to a unit to be able to make attacks, or be attacked in close combat.

...because a character is a separate unit in CC when resolving attacks. So you use the "unit" attack statement, which applies to all units, given above.

Only if its an Independent Character though. You cannot redirect your attacks against members of a Necron Court when they are in a squad.
