Both wife and I are fans of Star Wars, is this CGI series any good? (also I think there was a cartoon before it? )

There was a "Clone Wars" and now "The Clone Wars".
They actually both are pretty good. The current one has some very mature themes couched within it, including at least two episodes where genocide and the forced resettlement of indigenous peoples were discussed.

My girlfriend and I love the show. There are episodes where it's kinda "kiddy", but it's like what Kan said, there are more serious episodes. Plus, there are other episodes that give tribute to other movies/film culture (Godzilla-like monster, an episode based off The Seven Samurai, some with a Noir feel).

The CGI series is not as good as the animated series IMHO, but it's not bad.

There are two series of cartoons set in the Clone Wars, along with the movie (which was really just two episodes mashed together and made into a movie...)
Star Wars: Clone Wars - Done by Genndy Tartakovsky quite a few years back, is a lead up to Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. It is done in more traditional animation style, and features a good deal of WAY over the top action sequences. Mace Windu, for instance, jumps several miles at a time in one episode. It is a very fantastical depiction, in my opinion, of Jedi abilities, but is still absolutely amazingly wonderful. It's one of the few sets of video files I have on my phone.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Is the modern CGI series. A CGI movie was released a few years back, but that was actually just the first two episodes mashed together and sold for big screens (where it flopped, as I understand it.). This series is exceedingly well done, although every once in awhile you get a few episodes that stand out as lackluster.
The series takes place during the Genndy Tartakovsky series timeline. It is also a little more mature? adult? than it would seem at first glance. There's a good amount of brutal violence and on-screen death in the series, and not just in the "big explosion and people don't get back up" variety. For example, Count Dooku at one point forces one man to shoot another, breaks the first's neck with the Force, then tosses his corpse aside like a rag doll. Many of the episodes are very dark, and there is a bit of self-referential humor to the series. The characters themselves are also a bit more fleshed out during the series, and the interactions between Kenobi and Asajj Ventress are almost perfectly voiced.
Now, what I'm going to say next is going to seem like a blatant lie. You're going to look at the line, shake your head and say "You're lying. There's no way." but here it is anyway:
This series made me not hate Jar-Jar Binks.
I'm going to repeat that, as I'm sure you're looking at my post like I just admitted to eating puppies and kittens while sitting on a throne of dead babies.
This series made me not hate Jar-Jar Binks.
First off: the voice actor is different. His voice is deeper, far less grating on the ears, and he screams a LOT less.
Secondly: He is actually portrayed as a serious character often times. Somewhere along the line, he grew a backbone, sacked up and decided to actually be a real character.
Now, for all the praise I've given it, there are a bunch of really, really bad episodes. The 4th season has been pretty lackluster so far, especially the C3-PO/R2-D2 episodes.
I saved this bit for last, as I really think it bears mentioning:
Perhaps the most amazing part of this series is the Clones. They're all over the place, in just about every episode, and are the show's main chaff. They look nigh-identical and are all voiced by one person: Dee Bradley Baker. I feel this needed to be a separate point, because of how amazingly unique the series manages to make them. Sure, you do get the legions of faceless troopers whose sole purpose is to get shot, stabbed, eaten, melted, blown up, thrown off cliffs, impaled and otherwise die their gribbly deaths. Despite that, there is an amazing amount of unique development in episodes like "Rookies"(S1 E05), "Clone Cadets" (S3 E01) and "ARC Troopers" (S3 E02).
So... wall of text aside, the show is good and you should watch it. It's certainly one of the better Star Wars things to come out since Return of the Jedi.

I've yet to meet anyone that likes that chowderhead. Since I have not watch any of the cartoons will it be like a nice investment?

This.
There are several a few episodes that revolve mainly around the Clones and how different they are. One of my favorites was "The Deserter" in Season 2. They try to make a point that the Clones not all the same, and even how different Clone Commanders/Jedi work together.

Bleh, find the animation of each to be atrocious cgi garbage, but that's just me. The animated series was pretty awesome though.

The clones in the series are awesome. Too awesome. They make it hard for me to believe that they could turn and kill the Jedi like they are portrayed to without a moments hesitation after some of the bonding they do with the Jedi.

The CG series is pretty good. i'd recommend watching it.
It has some pretty good action and some cool Jedi are in it.
Alot more warfare is in it, commanders and troops carry out other military actions and it feels more like we are following the war a little more.
It deals with pretty deep stuff sometimes, one man gets stabbed in the chest and it's pretty in your face. A young girl begs for some one to kill her because she is being controlled. So it does appeal to older fans.
One of the best bits for me are the "Darth Vader" moments where Anakin shows some dark side triats. And they play the Impirial March theme lighty in the back ground.
Also Liam Neeson did some voice acting in it.
Propably one bit that might be annoying, to older fans more so,is Asuka. She's Anakin Padawan, and her only role to state the obvious and over react to everything. And the same for Padme she's really boring.

I'm watching season 3 DVD now. It's a bit weaker because it's obvious they're padding this out aiming to run for years and years.
The dullest episodes are the ones with the marquee villains and heroes because everyone is girded in plot armor you know nothing can happen and each battle will be inconclusive.
The best are the ones that feature new or one shot characters where they can actually tell a story.
I should note the series has an anthology format, you might have 2 episodes that follow each other but other times you'll just be dropped in the middle of a story with a quick "Anakin Skywalker has been captured by the seperatists" and go from there.
I kind of wonder what their endgame is though. Will they really show the clones turning on the Jedi? Is Asoka dead meat? Or will they wimp out somehow?
A buddy of mine is a huge SW fan and he won't let his young kids see Revenge of the Sith just yet.
I kind of think the Rebellion era would have been a better way to go, but then you lose the Jedi and they are just too cool.

The entire series is set BEFORE episode 3, so no, they will not be showing the clones turning on the jedi.
That story has already been told in ep3.
They are hoping this series goes for long enough that the tech can play catchup again and allow them to do a TV series with movie level fx for a TV budget.

Well, at the beginning they said it would be 5 seasons and thats it. Seeing how it is widely popular through all sorts of ages, I think theyll try to milk it a bit more ...
Overall though I really enjoy the series especially since its not really that much of a kids show. Id recommend both, the animated and the CGI!
