Subject: Kan Wall with No Dreads

I currently run a Kan Wall and am really enjoying the style of play, but I'm currently playing with a different unit than the norm and wanted to see if anyone else had tried something similiar. I'm not using dreads......I'm running meganobs instead. Any love or hate on this idea? So far, this has been really effective, but I wanted to see what others thought.

Could be interesting. Slow and Purposful can be a real pain if you contioyusly roll terribly, slowing your entire battleline down.
I assume you use KFFs as normal thus confering a 5+ cover save to the meganobs. The only issue I see is that all of the anti-tank weaponry that normally would attempt to pop the kans are now aiming at your meganobs. A 5+ cover is pretty bad when alot of that weaponry is going to cause instant death loosing out on the benefits of two wounds.
A better non-kan variant of the kan wall would be to run 9 warbuggies in place of the kans. You still gain the benefits of 4+ cover for the boyz, and a 4+ cover for the buggies and being able to move 12' and still shoot is great when the boyz are about to assualt avoiding the traffic jam that tends to occur with kans. With the points saved you can bring full mobs of lootas and big guns for some real dakka!

Now that is an interesting idea and is definitely a unique one. The only problem I have with it is the following.....I already own the Kans. Otherwise that could be tons of fun launching TL rockets all over the freaking place. The downside.....yes, there is a downside....the Kans are a hair more durable than the buggies and the dreadnaught power weapon has come in handy several times with humie crumping.

I think a dreddless kan wall is fine in principle - the dredds tend to have a different role and so be targetted by the enemy differently anyway. I think the ideal would be to choose dredd replacements that will seriously tempt opponents to not shoot at the kanz (thus keeping the kanz alive longer). I'm not sure that maganobs are the best choice to do that... hmm, something like nob bikers perhaps?

We need Meks for the KFF to shield the kans
having Meks we get free slot for dread
so people put dread in for the heck of it xD

Clang,
My only moment of pause here is that they are so expensive and would be a challenge from a unit coherency stand point to stay with the army. My fear would be that I have this Alpha unit running around that gets overwhelmed and slaughtered too early in the combat. While the walking MANs my be inconvenient at times due to their speed I can keep them in formation if need be.

Yeah, if you're going to use nob bikers, they'd zoom forwards (using as much cover as possible) out of KFF range, getting shot at lots but hopefully keeping your Wall marching forwards pretty much untouched. And expensive 'suicide' unit though. Or you could do something similar with Kommandoes or the deepstriking jumppack boys - in either case, causing general havoc which your opponent needs to sort out pronto, while your more distant Wall marches on, ready to kick ass in later turns.
But other players would prefer to optimise the KFF benefits, e.g. by just replacing the dredds with shoota boys or something similarly cheap and simple.
The real point is, just because you CAN field 2 Dredds due to the KFF meks, doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea. The points may be spent better on Elites or Fast Attack or even more troops.

Why not field buggies instead of dreads instead? That way you can still field your kans. 3 buggies w/ TL rokkits cost exactly the same as a dread w/ 2 DCCW. The buggies help with the armor saturation, drawing fire away from the kans, and they can benefit either from the KFF or their own cover save if you decide to flatout.

Actually I would rather field gretchin in front of my boyz than MANz. Mega-Armored Nobz have a really bad leadership value and will very likely delay your entire army due to slow and purposeful. Gretchin are dirt cheap, have more wounds and can reroll moral checks, and your opponent is forced to shoot at 3 point models with 5+ cover saves. There really isn't any efficient way to shoot down that many gretchin, so any lascannons, meltas or other fancy anti-tank stuff are turned into wasted points.
In addition, gretchin are guaranteed to lose any combat if they are charged, leaving any charging opponents out in the open right in front of your boyz.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |
