I'm playing a game later today against a Tyranid troop heavy army. This is my best guess of what i should field against it;


CCS - 145
4x Melta Guns, Chimera with ML/HF

CCS - 125
4x Flamers, Chimera with ML/HF

Vets - 140pts
3x Flamers, Chimera with ML/HF

Vets - 140pts
3x Flamers, Chimera with ML/HF

Vets - 200pts
3x Plasma guns, Autocannon, Chimera with ML/HB, HS

Basilisk - 125

Basilisk - 125


The Melta CCS will be hunting MCs while the other CCS and and all of the flamer Vets are killing bugs and defending objectives. Plas/AC Vets sit on rear objective. Basilisks rain down fury on everything they can.

What do you guys think? C&C greatly appreciated, need help asap because I'm playing today.

If you can, drop the basilisks for something like a russ, because with a nippy army like a troop nids army, he can close within that minimum range, which'd be pretty frustrating

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I didn't think about the minimum range.. Thank you.

I could put in a Bare Leman Russ and a Scout Sentinel with Missile Launcher or something.

Or I could put in 3 Griffons, as their minimum range is only 12 inches.

You really should never put flamers in Vet squads. You pay a premium for the BS4 and running flamers defeats the purpose.

I know what you are trying to "do" with the flamers. Truth is, the only thing that hurts in a Tyranid list are the MCs and Genestealers. The HF on your Chimeras is more than sufficient to nuke the Stealers that get close to the parking lot. As it stands, your flamer saturation is way too high.

Basilisks are total crap. Unfortunately, motyak is fail for suggesting LRs, which are equally worthless vs Nids. Go for Vendettas. The TL las is what you need to bring down the big boys and they are fast enough to avoid getting into trouble. Couple this with the total lack of Tyranid firepower and they should stay alive for the entire game, making them a great buy.

I like exterminators against nids. but hydras will tear them up too.

on a side note, i know mech is all the rage but is mech actually the best route to take for anti-nid?

Seems like a solid steady battle line would serve you better.

Seems like heavy weapons squads with autocannons and special weapons teams with flamers would tear nids a new one.

Mech is absolutely the best route vs Nids. Hands down. No questions asked.

Hydras are great - I use them in all of my tournament lists. But - if you are going to tailor a list for Nids, use Vendettas instead. The AP 2 will go a long way against the MCs you have to bring down.

First off, cheers.
Secondly, He said a troop heavy army, which means lots of nids, not a nidzilla list. Thirdly, hive guard can wreck vendettas real well, whereas russ' can pump out large blast markers (strength 8) and a lascannon on their hull (strength 9) which will hurt the MCs and the hordes.


Actually, what has a 2+save in nid armies? Because a banewolf could be pretty fun, wounding on 2s, no cover, AP3. Wack a multi-melta on the hull and it can move and fire 2 weapons which wound MCs on 2/can still engage more horde armies

Yeah I like that, lots of armour, a few units with good BS and a tank to threaten enemy MCs/tougher units, and then some flamers and a hydra to deal with hordes. Hope you have fun playing them Let us know how you go. Post a batrep up

You can get 2 griffons for one Russ and they'll rip troop (guants/'stealers?) heavy nids a new ass. They're S6 AP4 with a minimum of only 12 and you can reroll their to hit roll. Give them heavy flamers so they can purge them when they run in so the minimum doesnt matter.

Yeah, the Griffons are not a bad choice, but I think Motyak was on good route on the banewolf/Devil Dog route with hull heavy flamers. Guess you could always do both, though it will cost you your Hydra, LRBT, and a PIS Chimera.

You can't take PIS on their own. Only as part of a full platoon, sorry.
