I thought that I would be able to easily resist the lure of the Necrons. They were only so-so interesting to me in their old incarnation - personality-less constructs, the lot of them, or so I saw.

Well, after reading the new backstory and finding all kinds of fun images and themes popping to mind, I knew I had to get in on it. Were they going to be competitive? Danged if I knew! I just wanted a legion of metal men at my Overlord's command!

One thing I knew - my Necron's wouldn't be chrome or silver. I wanted a heavy looking metal, something old. I wanted a brass or bronze look, as I really like patina'd metal and thought it would be a fun way to show the age of the army. So I searched through the 'net and made myself a Inspiration and Theme Board, like so:

Since There are several "tips of the hat" in the new Necron codex to old movies and the like, I wanted to go that route with their look to a degree, but also to a Steampunk-inspired color scheme, if not actually using steam power. I like the glowing green eldritch energy idea too much. So I thought an old 40's era space opera/serial cliffhanger movie look would be great, and I thought this would work to get that across:

So I made some "ray gun" modifications to the Necron Gauss Blaster, and got this:

... and am pretty happy with it. So I went to the color scheme test, and this, my Proof of CRONcept (oh, how drol, ha-ha) emerged:

For some reason the eyes aren't showing up as having been painted green, but they have. I'll have to edit this in a bit to describe the idea I'm going for in the army, for those interested! Let me know what you think.

Loving this blog already, your paint scheme is nice and rustic, and the orange shoulder pads really pop out of the metallics.

The coils are a nice idea! I found these for you if you're interested...

Hey, thanks Stasis. I appreciate it. And thanks for that link - I've been looking for small gears and cogs for my orks, actually! I might use some on certain character pieces for these Necrons, but I figure since their color scheme is more overtly steampunk-inspired that I would leave the gears off this army for the most part.

This first squad (or 2 squads, not sure how this is going to go for my army list just yet) is 95% finished - I just have to decide on a color to ring the bases with. I'm torn between a cold grey to tie in with the ruined city look, or a olive drab or very greenish-brown to tie in to whatever board they may be playing on. Any suggestions?

I'm liking the look of them so far, though.

With this army I'm trying to limit myself on not buying anything else until I finish what I bought previously. So, once I figure out what color goes on the lower ring of the bases I can go and get another box to add to the force - though I should probably outline an army list at some point...
Currently I'm thinking of picking up another Warriors box. I'll get more Scarabs that way, and I only need to paint 8 out of the 12 Warriors in that box to get a full squad of 20 (or 2 10-man squads). Then I can use the remaining Warrior bodies for Cryptek conversions once I get a Immortals box for the Deathmark cyclops heads, and the Immortals as well, of course.

Go with black on the base ring.

it is never obrusive and allows the eye to be drawn up to the base top and the model.

Also it works on all boards.

Here's 20 Necron Warriors, finished! The pic is rather Teh Suck, and I will be fixing that with a proper photo session before too long. Just wanted to show that the blog is still going forward, albeit slowly.

With some Festivus Monies I went and purchased several Necron models, but I am still sticking to my plan of not building another model until I finish the current Necron project. So, that means that since I have 2 squads of finished Warriors I can now bust out and start working on my Monolith that I bought some time ago. Soon, my 2 Ghost Arks, 1 Doomsday Ark, 1 Command Barge, 1 Annihilation Barge, Lychguard, and Immortals will arrive, and then I can add that all to the bits I've purchased for Cryptec conversions.

While I don't have a list nailed down yet, I will have:

2 Overlords
1 Command Barge
10 warriors
10 warriors
2 Ghost Arks
5 Immortals
5 Crypteks (using Deathmarks for them, mostly, along with the Lychguard staves)
5 Lychguard with Shields
5 Praetorians with Casters/Voidblades
~12 Scarab bases
1 Monolith
1 Doomsday Ark
1 Annihilation Barge

Lot to do...

Wow. Has it seriously been about a year since I've done anything with these guys? Yikes. I'll have to post where they are now I guess.

I have started paint on my converted Monolith (with crazy lightning glowy light effects in the Infinity Gate!) and need to finish it. I have finished and based 5 Gauss Blaster Immortals, and built 5 more.

I still have to build 10 Tesla Carbine Immortals, 5 Deathmarks, a Triarch Stalker, and a big list of other things, but I'm trying to finish painting what I build, though I've already failed at that...

Anyhow, here's the Harbinger of Despair cryptek that I made this weekend, and started paint on him too. This is him before paint:

I'll have to get pics up of his paint when that's finished.

I'll have pics of the new Immortal squad up soon as well.

Thanks guys! Of course I can't take credit for originating the idea to use the warhammer wraith model as the conversions base, but it's too perfect not to use for the Despairtek.

I need to think of a good idea for a Ethermancer (Stormtek), right now I'm leaning on making his staff the focus and incorporating the triple ring design that the necron warriors have, and with a lightning rod kind of feel. I've seen a good idea for the Harbinger of Destruction that uses the tesla carbine as a base, so I may do that.

Okay, some more progress. I've been building these guys like a Spyder possessed, and have the first stage of paint on them as well.
So far that makes a Despair Cryptek, 5 Deathmarks, 10 Gauss Blaster Immortals and 10 Tesla Carbine Immortals, added onto the 24 Warriors. So that's my Troops handled, and an Elite slot.

Here's the pics so far.

I'll have to get a whole army shot pretty soon when these guys are all done.

Today I should have my latest shipment arrive, which is a Night Scythe, and 6 Wraiths.

Still have to finish painting the Monolith, and building a couple Ghost Arks, a Doomsday Ark, Annihilation Barge, and Triarch Stalker, then painting all those...

All right, got all the Troops done! At least I hope so. I really don't want to make any more ray-gun Warriors. Speaking of which, here's a couple better pics of them:

Gauss Immortals finished, better pics:

Tesla Immortals, finished finally:

Progress on the Deathmarks, I'm still not sure if I want to do their faceplates as dark blue like the rest of their armor or as light grey or white to make them stand out more.

And finally the Harbinger of Despair Cryptek, finished - aside from the ring of his base, i missed that, touched up now though...

So that's the Troops! The Deathmarks should be finished soon, and then I can start building the vehicles and Overlord. Still have to finish the Monolith, it's been half-done for months,,,
Nervous about painting the vehicles, they look like they will be a pain in the butt to assemble AND paint.

Have to assemble:
Overlord
2 Ghost Arks
2 Night Scythes
Triarch Stalker
6 Wraiths
Doomsday Ark
2 Annihilation Barges with options for a Command Barge for one
Crap, that's a lot still.

Man these guys are looking awesome. I really like the bronze colour you've used, it makes the models look really substantial. And the weapons look excellent.

Can't wait to see some more of your work!

Got a bit more progress done, but just one pic for now. Have more paint done on the Deathmarks but I'll just wait to show them when they're finished. The second Harbinger of Despair with Veil of Darkness is done (well, almost, just have to add a bit of torn fabric at the top of his back where the spine structure sticks through, and add rubble to his base) and he'll be going to paint soon as well. I wanted to have the two Harbingers be a bit different but still recognizable as the same kind of Cryptek. I figured they would experiment on themselves and make improvements or modifications as they want, so they both not need look the exact same.
