So I'm going to get the gears rolling on my Necron army again..but I'd rather focus on expanding my army by getting models I don't already have. However, some of the models I already have, like Immortals--I have the metal ones with the green rods, have a newer version out. Is it OK to continue using my old Immortals? In a casual game I don't see it being a problem but is this something people will be sticklers about? What if the newer models are bigger/smaller or have different base sizes (I think I read Immortals have a different base size)? Same thing goes for Wraiths, I already have some and don't really want to buy new ones when they are released.

Using older models is fine. Anyone who complains is in the wrong. GW have said using older models is fine. In fact most people enjoy seeing older models on the table. I loved seeing an old metal "cat" style chaos dreadnought the other day! Regarding Immortals, the base size is the same and they are virtually the same size so don't worry.

As long as they're recognisable for what they are, you're fine. I'd have no problems playing against old models that aren't significantly different in terms of size/basing/armament.

It is fine. The one ones people will have issue with is if the unit in question has changed dramatically in size with its later model- Cases in point, the Eldar Avatar and Ork Trukks.

Also, isn't there an issue that you have to use the base you got with the model (technically), yet the oldschool chaos termies are on smaller ones. Not a big deal, but some sticklers may grump.

Personally, I agree with monkeypuzzle, I love seeing oldschool models.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Once legal always legal is the GW rule on the use of models in tournaments.

Obviously in a friendly game you are always playing by consent of the other person, however the only time someone is likely to worry is if they perceive some unfair advantage from the different size of an older model.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If GW said no older models, most people would quit. I, myself, am going for old OOP emperors children models from the edition before plastic/metal hybrids because I love the models. Someone mentioned a single GW store that said no OOP models because they weren't got sale anymore, but that was surely just an uppity manager making a bad call.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

This is where the joke "hit them with a dreadsock" comes from kind of. The old dreads and vindicators (you could kill somebody with those) used to weigh alot but back on topic seeing old models is really nice some times, when their painted up and you can tell somebody has loved them its great. like ive got a squad of the old deathwing metal terminators that i still run.

The Emperor extends His will to us when we destroy the wicked and impure to reconquer the galaxy in His name. The Emperor leads the galaxy to righteousness, and thus we must petition for His judgement on the wicked... for it is judgement without mercy..

It's always okay to use old models. I use Marines from the 80s. The new Immortals and the old Immortals are only a tiny bit different, so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Totally fine to use older models. One of the guys at my FLGS bough his entire Ork army in 2nd Edition, so his force is about 90% older models. It's amazing to look at the differences between eras - modern, 5th Edition Killa Kans are twice as big as 2nd Edition Deff Dreads.

Use'em and Embrace it man! you're obviously a fan of 'crons from at least before the new codex.

Fluff-wise how does G-W justify different variations of the same unit? Answer: he's from a different class/group/time period, etc. Just say your necrons are extra ancient, or from a different dynasty, etc. fluff it up!

And if anyone has anything to say about it... throw one of the older brick sh*thouse vindicators into their face.

WYSIWYG is the only thing that really matters when using older models. I like using older ones, gives my army that retro look.
