Hello Warmahordes players,

I am playing my first game tomorrow, being taught how it all works.

Now I have glanced through the Menoth book at the game store, and ran across something that indicated rules about mandatory unit choices dependant on caster?

I did not have time to go more in depth. What kind of restrictions are there for building an army?

If I had my choice of building an army, just based on the models:

Either Feora, or Harbinger
Vigiliant Jack
Guardian Jack
Vanquisher Jack
2 squads of Daughters of the flame
Nicia

Or something like that. I am not even sure what points that makes exactly, but is something along these lines legal for game play?

The only mandatory unit is your warcaster(s) and the number of warcasters you're allowed depends on the points level (but usually just one)

Everything else has a Field Allowance which tells you how many of that unit you can have in your army (if you have enough points). Warjacks have an allowance of Unlimited and Characters are obviously unique so you can only have one.

You can try fiddling around with http://www.forwardkommander.com/. Its a free online list builder for warmachine.

So you army comes to around 28/29 points which is technically legal but is an odd amount of points to play; most games are played at around 25/35/50 points.

Hope that helps

You've probably seen the theme list section as you were looking through the forces of **** book. It's basically a more fluffy way to play the warcaster and as such gives you more thematic bonuses to offset the synergies you would be missing out on. However, most of the theme lists are considered underpowered when compared to picking whatever you like.

As you are a new player, have a look at the theme lists but don't try them out to begin with. Work out how the game works and then see if you fancy restricting yourself.

edit: It's not the best thing to have multiples of the same unit/jack. Sometimes it works (crusaders with Harbinger, Knight Exemplars with Kreoss2, Daughters with Thyra) but mostly an army should have multiple options available for you to take advantage of.

Yeah, generally go with options over doubles, I've played for years and have hardly any doubles.

Re: your list, that'll be around 25 points (smallish game), and should do okay, assuming your opponent isn't playing a fine-tuned list.

eFeora is probably the best option: pfeora murders infantry (but you have a tone of that) and the harbinger is really hard to keep alive w/o practice, so not a good starter.

also, a choir is considered just about mandatory if running more than 1-2 jacks.

Remember the caster's warjack points have to go towards warjacks. And I believe said warjacks have to be in their battlegroup, but not sure.

That is correct, if you are playing in tournament you have to bring a warcaster and use the warjack points on battlegroup.

Not only tournament. the rule book actually says that warjack points have to be spent on battlegroup. Of cause you could have a house rule or something at least people should know what they are changing and why.

The rules in Prime state the points must be spent on models in the warcaster's battlegroup, however, they need not be spent if the player chooses not to.

However, in tournaments, the player must play a list with at least the total available points, -2. So the warcaster or warlock must use at least their bonus points -2 or the list is not legal in those formats.

And stuff.
