This is the list for the first army I have come up with, and I would like some feedback on it. Seems pretty basic to me, not the way I usually play games, but since I am just starting I figure it would be fine.

HQ
Mephiston
250 points

Elites
Sanguinary Priest
Jump Pack
75 points

Sanguinary Priest
Jump Pack
75 points

Troops
Assault Squad
9 Marines
1 Melta
1 Power Fist
207 points

Assault Squad
9 Marines
1 Melta
1 Power fist
207 points

Assault Squad
9 Marines
1 Melta
182 points

Total points: 996

The local gaming group suggests a 1000 point army for beginners, let me know what you think.

I think you need to drop Mephiston. In a battle of this size, it's hard to justify spending a quarter of your points on only one model. A Librarian with a Jump Pack would give you some versatility and leave you with some more points to toss around. The problem I see with the rest of the army is that there is no diversity. You may want something that can throw down some respectable ranged firepower to hurt anything that your Assault Squads won't be able to beat (e.g. Eldar Howling Banshees).

not too bad of a list really. i agree with the previous poster about dropping meph for a basic libby obviously with a jump pack. give him shield of sanguinius for the almighty 5+ cover just in case you get caught out in the open. the other power is really up to your personal taste. id suggest sanguine sword or fear the darkness. sword will turn you into a beast and can one shot most independent characters and also deal with alot of tanks. and making a unit run like crazy is also fun when you use fear. just keep chasing them and it shouldn't take long to make them run of the board.

also try to squeeze in a second melta gun in your ASM just to deal with stuff better the points you get from dropping meph should take care of that. also a power fist on your third ASM would be recommended

but at this point value there really isnt much you can do and still keep with the DoA theme. id suggest vanguard vets normally but they cost too much and work much better at higher point armies

Mephiston is so beastly the stats really make him a great HQ choice, but in this instance I agree that 125 extra points by dropping him would allow me to flesh out the squads (thus making it better). Right now I am just going with the simple DoA feel to it, since I am building up the army at this point. Maybe I could throw down some Scouts with sniper riffles or a devastor squad?

New DoA List:

HQ
Librarian
Jump Pack
Shield of Sanguinous, Sanguine Sword
125

Elite
Sanguinary Priest
Jump Pack
75

Sanguinary Priest
Jump Pack
75

Troop
Assault Squad
10 Marines
2 MeltaGun, 1 Power Fist
235 Points

Assault Squad
10 Marines
2 MeltaGun, 1 Power Fist
235

Assault Squad
10 Marines
2 Melta Gun, 1 Power Fist
235

Total: 980 points

Maybe I drop down one assault squad to some scouts with a rhino and a land speeder or something? No idea if that fits in points wise, just thinking. Just throw meltabombs on the sergeants? Devastors with missile launchers?

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it!

I think that you may want a small (5 man?) squad of DC, just so you have a particularly special unit. A potential of 20 attacks combined with furious charge and weapon skill 5 is not to be sniffed at. No DoA, of course, but then again, Jump Packs could nearly get you another squad member if they weren't took...

Mephiston is totally justified at 250 pts IMHO he is just a beast and if you use him right he will tear through anything.

2500+ Pts.
1000 Pts.

meph is beast but at 1k its really hard to justify him when your really needing a regular libby.

but if your gonna drop a ASM squad id go with 2 sqauds of dev with 4 missile launchers each. and if you have any points left another sang priest w/o jump pack to stick around for the devastators
