I got one of the 40k ones on the cheap at some point ($16). Those don't seem to be for sale anymore? I only see the "warhammer basing kit" now. I was sort of pleased with the purchase. I like some of the little resin details to put on bases, and it's nice having slate chipped to just the right size. I filled the spare tubs with some play sand, which made for one neat small box with almost everything in it.

They now appear to be $25 each, which is utterly insane. It was nearly too much money when it was $16, for what you got. Instead, you should get a 50lb bag of play sand from Home Depot or Lowes for $4, go to a landscaping place and get bag of slate scree or chippings, and some elmers glue. Altogether it will be about half the price. Spend the rest on ebay buying heads and bits to adorn your bases with, and you'll be better off.

go to your FLGS and physically hold it in your hands and ask the same question. I do this every time I want to buy a citadel product, and 9 times out of 10, the answer is no. For the same price from GF9, you can get at least 3x the amount.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

If you're going on a vacation where there's nature, or you live in a non-urban setting (or an urban setting where there are nature-y things nearby), it's quite an adventure to walk around and discover places where you can get different grades of sand, suitable rocks and twigs for your basing and terrain needs. If people ask what's a grown-up doing picking up and shoveling sand, rocks and stuff... the easiest answer is that your nephew/kid/little sister needs it for her school project. It's harder to explain that you need it to base your plastic army men.

I guess if you mainly just base in sand and only want some special bases for a handful of characters it could be worth it.

But if your basing a large amount of figs, then no its not.

I agree that there are lots of other, better options for bulk basing materials if you're looking to base entire units or armies. But the Citadel basing kit was never aimed at that. It was designed for distinctive basing bits to enhance characters, monstrous creatures and the like with the larger slate pieces and the resin bits with helmets weapons etc. I bought one a couple of years ago and I think I got quite a bit of value from it. I don't see the 40k one anymore. I don't know how much value the fantasy kit would have for me.

I'm blessed to live in Vancouver next to Stanley Park, I can grab all the 'nature' I want to glue onto stuff, but I'm lazy.

Michaels (craft store for moms who like scrapbooking) sells sheets of cork board for $10-$20. You get enough for a 1500 point army for this price and cork makes great rocky outcroppings etc. I also like it because it's lighter than actual stone.
