I was reading a few posts on a Blog spot (wont say which) and a couple of the guys were talking about Gyrocopters being frowned upon... why?

I can't see why.

While the gyrocopter has some obvious flaws (Most notably being the only partial-hit template in the game) IMHO I've seen tons of people using it to a decent effect.

But still, a T5 W3 flyer still has its weaknesses.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

The general reasons given is that it is a 'fast-cav' equivalent... that isn't fast cav. It doesn't get Vanguard (and doesn't benefit from Strollaz either) or March and Shoot, no to mention Feigned Flight. It has a template attack which is nice... except that it is the ONLY template in WFB that doesn't auto-hit partials.

It's also as expensive as 10 or more Dwarves to bolser your combat blocks.

It's really expensive for what you get. To an extent that's not a problem, Dwarves should pay a premium for mobile units, to keep them specialised in more static warfare, but to my mind they've taken it too far, and for that price you really need something that can survive a lot more shooting and dish out a lot more damage. I think a price drop would see it become a lot more viable.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

On the perfumed wind

I've used one in almost every game of 8th edition- by my count that's about 90 games. I agree with the sentiment that it is overpriced (though not overwhelmingly so)- it either needs to come down a little in price or pick up a little effectiveness, either through elimination of partials or the ability to march and shoot.

Currently I mostly use it in the role of a slightly tougher great eagle. Despite considering it overpriced, I consider it too fun a piece to leave at home.

P.S. I'd be interested in hearing what blog is so down on them. PM me if you don't feel like sharing to the general public...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Bugman's Brewery in general isn't terribly fond of them right now. Some people love them (I'm one), but the general concensus is that they really don't live up to their cost.

They can't march and shoot? Can a lord on a great eagle march and shoot? I thought they could...

Also, can't a dragon march and use its breath weapon?

Breath weapons are given a specific exception; check the BRB page 46.

Only flying units consisting of more than one model are allowed to march and shoot, as they are treated as Skirmishers. Single models cannot, since they are specifically exempted from the Flyer/Skirmisher rule (BRB p.70)

EDIT: So it looks like your Lord on Great Eagle (or pegasus, or manticore, or dragon, or whatever) cannot march and shoot. Strange, but there you are.
