So I started 40k about 2 years ago and started with Necrons because I loved the models, loved the fluff, and knew NOTHING about the game After I played for about 6 months I realized they werent the most competitive army out there, and I moved on to Tyranids because I wanted are more recently updated Xenos army (when I started it was between the Crons, Nids, and Daemonhunters... since in most games I always play undead or holy warriors, daemonhunters just seemed so much more expensive with their all metal armies so crons it was...), Nids became the next logical choice.

I really enjoyed the nids, but in my area there are frequently MEQ tournies, so when Grey Knights were announced, I knew it would fill my power army niche and it was the daemonhunters I wanted from the beginning so it was a great role to fill, and I've basically been playing them exclusively since they came out.

Now the Necron codex came out, I bought a few more models and tallying up everything I own, I now own 6100+ points worth of necrons (I went pretty hardcore when I started playing lol), and after playing a few games with the new codex ive come to realize one thing: Ive taken power weapons for granted.

Almost all HQ's in the Necron codex have special staves or special weapons... but none of them seem to be power weapons. I mean Trazyns staff is amazing... except for the fact that I need to inflict a wound ... and with my luck, those ork boyz will either not get hit by me, or if they do, they wont get wounded, or if i do manage to wound, they'll pass their damn 6+ save... so it just occured to me - how do the necrons have this vast superior tech, but they dont have bloody power weapons? I mean ONE purifier can do what trazyn can do BEFORE the assault starts (if i recall sanctified flame correctly...), and then proceed to hit first out of almost all enemies (halberds... mmmm), and go through armor saves.

I went back through my tyranid codex to figure out how I survived without "power weapons", but then I realized I was stacking a ridiculous amount of wounds with poison weapons, or also furious charge from adrenal glands letting me re-roll to wound on T4 targets... or i was hitting with MC's who just laughed at armor saves.

I mean, throw 20 kitted out hormagants vs 20 flayed ones, and the hormagants will strike first, get 3 attacks each on the charge, and wound on 4+ with toxin sacs, any of those that don't would, they re-roll and again, wound on 4+... on top of that, they have scything talons and re-roll 1's...

I know Tau has their issues with CC, but they also have TONS of weapons outside of 24" range which seems to be the Necrons magic number...

Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions on alleviating this issue with the Necrons? I know there's lychguard, but they're bloody expensive... but how would I engage ork boys or a swarm of hormagants and hope they survive long enough so trazyn could potentially wound ONE of them to get his super staff attack?

Well, you have things like Tesla Weapons and rapidfire to cleanse horde numbers, which power weapons aren't really necessary for.

As for combat, if you really need a power weapon in a squad, use the court, to break off lords into squads.

Crpytek, use the storm one to inflict instantly D6 Str 8 ap5, ever little helps I find, rapid fire and walk back, or if you want to be very annoying, use a monolith to teleport your warriors away from an oncoming horde, very useful thing to have, as you can quickly remanouver for another turn or two of blasting.

Another thing is using the effects and attacks that cause difficult and dangerous terrain, the bigger the squad the much more likely they are to die, and every death counts as it adds up quickly in assault. And if your playing Orkz and they are close to your line, charge your warriors into them. Then you'll strike same time, Str 4 and T4 and 4+/5++ with two attacks should easily lay some damage onto Boyz and better is next turn you'll stand back up.

Telsa as Sasori stated is brilliant, the Telsa Destructor esp works a real number on hordes. End of the day you will rarely win an assault with anything less than Lychguard or royal court, but man is our shooting ample compensation.

Lychguard and Praetorians would like a word. And the Warscythe just called. He says to give him a ring back.

Yeah. Necrons don't like CC though. Shoot them to death first. Tesla FTW!

Actually the more games I play since my original post, the more I find the necrons strength isn't necessarily the power weapons themselves... but rather certain units. 1 lord in a group of 10 warriors with a warscythe & mindshackle scarabs can net you quite a few CC kills.

Make the opponent's power weapons hit him, we don't need that many
