2000 pts. Necron v. Vanilla Marines
In the week I've had since the Necron release (exactly 7 days to the game), I have only had time to get Imhotek, Trazyn and a few Crypteks built and painted (we like to try to only field painted models, but my 2 crypteks were just base coated), so I was basically running an old list with new rules and a few new units.
It was enough.
My list (which I wouldn't run again, I just had no choice)
Imhotek
Trazyn
2 Crypteks (Storm and Despair)
8 Lychguard (Pariah count as)
2 Spyders
2x 6 scarabs
2 x 10 warriors
1 x 10 Immortals
Monolith
1 C'tan with Fireshards and Moulder of Worlds (or whatever)
In the first turn I siezed control w/ Imhoteks 4+.
In the first phase his lightening took out 1 Predator, 1 Rhino, 1 Vindicator, immo'ed his Landraider and stripped it of 3 weapons, all on glance.
Game over.

Uh, Lightning strikes will hit a unit, regardless of where it is on the board on a roll of "6". Placement has nothing to do with that.
Lucky rolls on the lightning strikes there! that's for sure.

Well if they are really young guys then they may have just decided to call it if one got all angry. It happens.
Also, he did wreck (I'm gonna call the LR a wreck because it is useless really apart from as a bunker unless it also had a MM in which case it probably has a TL HB left) 490 points. Thats with the Pred as a autocannon/HB sponson and the vindicator with a SS. Thats a quarter of his army, 2 of which are transports, 2 of which are gun platforms and 1 of which is meant to be intimidating and scary if it gets close. Before his first turn (well, at the very start). That's pretty intimidating. And before any more Necron shooting. Some people would pack up after that or decide to go just 1 or 2 more turns and if it just went flat call it and start a new game, because they wouldn't find it fun.

Actually, my buddy played all the way through to the last round, but it wasn't very competative. Scarabs chewed up his other Rhino and one of his Dreads. His other dread got stuck on dangerous terrain. The Monolith sucked most of his chaplain lead th ss terminators into the void, and the immortals shot the rest. He assaulted Trazyn and the Lychguards with a tac squad and got smoked by the STR 7 no AS Warscythes.
He was able to take out the C'tan with the Termies, Imhotek (mostly because I wanted to get him close to try his staff), an Immortal and a Lychguard, and a unit of scrabs. Oh, and he wrecked the Monolith on turn 5.
He fought honorably, didn't whine, and went for moral victories.

Yes, sounds like well-above average rolling on the Lightning.

Those were some hot dice indeed.
I've played two games with Imotekh. In 4 turns of Night Fight, I've hit only one thing with Lightning (a Rhino) and did nothing more than Shake it...and then I stopped playing with Imotekh.

Fair play to your friend. I know far too many people from my old club which would have quit and cried cheese as soon as that happened. Anybody who fights on after a devastating piece of bad luck like that is awesome in my books.
I haven't played with Imotekh yet, but I hope to get a game in before christmas with him (busy as heck til then). I'm getting mixed reports, but this was an astonishing piece of rolling on your part. Kudos.

Imhoteks lightning is very unlikely but if you roll well generally speaking whatever gets hit is not gonna like it... My tau friend likes to whin about that even though I only killed a pirahna... And he likes to use his disruption pods against them which I dont think should work but hey what do I know?

This sounds fun (for the Necron player), but it's like hearing Imo do this is like hearing your friend hit the lottery. You get excited and go play the lottery, and lo and behold, you don't win.
I think Imotekh should come with a sign around his neck that reads "I'm not really as great as you think I'll be."
If you roll lots of 6s or have fixed dice or something, he may very well be the best general ever created. For everyone else, he's lower to middle of the road as far as a competetive HQ choice.

It was crazy luck on my part, but I still like Imhotek, and here is why.
1. I stole initiaive on a 4. This set up an opportunity to adapt to his deployment and strike before he could even move.
2. Night Fighting: Some people have said that he may not work well with Doomsday Arks, because of the night fighting, but I disagree since he gives them a round to charge the big shot under cover of night (I'd have taken at least one DD Ark if I had one built.) Either way he gives you a chance to get those warriors and immortals into cover, wraiths behind walls they can go through, and scarabs closer to a target.
3. Odds: Sure, I won't see another opening like that, but odds are I can hit one or two units, which is worth it. Also, when night fighting goes away he still has some good stats, gear, and a 2+ AS.
4. Decoy: You can hide him, or flaunt him, but in my game Trazyn waltzed right up the board to the furthest and most easily defended objective with no opposition. Also, I lost the storm ability on the first roll. If I hadn't, he may have considered chasing Imhotek more.
At 225 he may not be for all lists, but he is an HQ on par with other powerful characters, which was something 'Crons were sorely missing.

So your saying the old nightbringer coldn't stand up to other HQ choices?

I had a very similar game against my buddy's eldar last night. It was my first time using imotehk, and my first three lightning rolls were all 6's. Wrecked a falcon w/ holo fields and killed 3 rangers and a dire avenger. Next turn wrecked a warwalker and took a weapon off of another. My friend was ready to quit after that (but i made him keep playing so i could see how wraiths work. Spoiler: They work well).

I have played one game with Imotekh, his Lightning killed a Daemon Prince and he himself killed a couple of Berzerkers in combat thanks the the re-rolls. He is tough with the 3++ and really boosts my short range army. Great sportsmanship by your opponent, that is what I would like to see instead of people who just give up or carry on but have no interest.
