I am a relatively new player. I have been playing Eldar for the past 2 months (my entire 40k career) and wanted to dabble in IG. I have a vague idea of where to start, but would greatly appreciate any advice or critique.

[920 point so far]

CCS (145)
4x melta
Chimera HB/HF

Veterans (155)
3x Melta
Chimera HB/HF

Veterans (100)
3x Melta
(Go in Vendetta)

Veterans (100)
3x Melta
(Go in Vendetta)

Vendetta (130)

Vendetta (130)

Manticore (160)
HF

How should I spend the remaining 80 points, or are there some great improvements that could be made to this list?

I know this will take you above 1000 points but get a leman russ. If you want to stay bellow eighty a tecpriest to fix your veichles would be good, they are only 45 points.

Going to be a very strong start. I might suggest using a large part of your remaining points to pick up Marbo.

So maybe Marbo and throw some HB sponsons on one of the Vendettas?

Marbo and maybe some HK missles for chimeras

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

Obliterators: They've got a gun for that.

I forgot about the HKs, that sounds like a good idea, thanks

Or buy another Chimera for the Vet squad that's currently in the Vendetta, and then put HBs on both Vendettas. Or maybe drop some meltas and get a Hellhound/Devildog. The more vehicles the better!

Yeah, maybe the extra Chimera would be a good idea. Is Marbo really worth the points then?

I'm always about more boots on the ground and only 35 guardsmen in a 1000 point game seems a little light to me. You've got good short range fire in the veterans, and some nice longer ranged fire in the Vendettas, but not a lot of bodies for taking bullets. You seem to like your veterans (who wouldn't? I love mine), so I'd get more of those. Pull out the Manticore, they're great against lightly armored horde armies and vehicle parking lots, the first of which will be small(er) and the second of which will be rare at 1000 points. That will free up 155 points, enough to stick another squad of Vets in complete with a Chimera.

Of course, that doesn't solve your problem of "what to do with those remaining 80 points", but the answer of "more vets" never hurt. A heavy weapon team attached to the company command squad would be a good use as well. Let's look at where the list is light:

You've got some roles managed:
Veterans: Close in anti-tank
Vendetta: Long-range anti-tank
Chimeras: Some horde management, but since I figure they'll be rolling around most of the time they're not going to get to fire on it, and if they're flaming a horde the vets inside aren't being efficient with those meltas.

I'd say a Heavy Bolter team would be a nice fill-in for that slot. Again, not 80 points but it puts you closer.

Yeah, you have way to many toys as it is and not enough troops. You have 5 AV 12 vehicles potentially on the board at 1k points and 2 of them are Chimeras and only one of those Chimeras is a scoring unit. In a objective game or against anything with any real amount of firepower, your list is going down in flames.

Chimera Vets are a hoard list, meant to have enough Chimeras survive long enough to get up close to actually use those melta guns. The problem with mech lists is the smaller the points, the weaker the list is because you have fewer vehicles to play with. I will give you an example below of what I am talking about...

/Naked/, a CCS and two vets in Chimeras are 355pts. Add on 100pts for the 10 melta guns and you have half of your points in 3 units (455pts)!

With a foot list with a CCS and 2 Vets, I can have 3 lascannons, 8 plasma guns, with Camo Cloaks on the CCS and Sentries on the Vets for 450pts.

Everyone has 3+ cover saves and I can even issue Orders like 'Bring it Down!' on 2 units a turn to make them twin linked to fire on your vehicles.

Who do you think will win in a fight starting 24" apart from each other?

Your list, at 1500pts or 1850pts or 2000pts with your heavy and fast are fine, but not at 1000pts.

CCS - 120pts
3x Flamers, Chimera with HHF

Vets - 155pts
3x Melta guns, Chimera with HHF

Vets - 155pts
3x Melta guns, Chimera with HHF

Vets - 155pts
3x Melta guns, Chimera with HHF

Vets - 155pts
3x Melta guns, Chimera with HHF

Vendetta - 130pts

Vendetta - 130pts

1000pts

Cool, thanks for the advice. That list looks nasty, definitely going to have to buy more chimeras.
Also, could I drop one of the melta vet units in favor of a Leman Russ, or is that a bad idea as I should probably take two if I take one?

Hoard is hoard. You dilute it you end up doing the work for your opponent.

I suggest you throw the LRBTs in there when you play in bigger games. You just do not have the points to throw them in without ending up with your first list's problems. Either that or drop the Chimeras to pay for them, but you may then want to re-equip you troops.
