Befitting a TV series that constantly reinvents itself, Variety reports that Doctor Who will be retooled again, this time as a big-screen franchise under Harry Potter director David Yates. The BBC is overseeing the adaptation, which Yates says could take “two to three years to get it right,” adding, “It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.” And you know what that means: Yates says he will “start from scratch” on the project, so it will have nothing to do with any of the recent Doctor Who reboots—including its current, Matt Smith-starring incarnation. Instead, Yates says he’s looking at new writers who can draw familiar elements from the long-running series but create their own reimagining, not unlike Bryan Singer’s recently stated goal to start all over again on Battlestar Galactica, despite there being a perfectly fine reinvention from just a few years ago. Fortunately, just as with Battlestar Galactica, fans of Doctor Who aren’t really known for being obsessive, so they’ll probably be cool with just whatever he wants to do, just as long as there's some scarves and robots in there.

I'm sure everyone will be excited and no one will express misgivings or concerns.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

RIP Dr Who - Murdered by the film industry.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Come on! A Doctor Who movie should be awesome! It's not like they haven't done a crappy one before! Uh...

Oh wait, they did.

Honestly, it could be worse. At least they're sticking with a British director - there were rumors a long while ago that there was going to be an American Doctor Who movie.

... Again. Go very wrong AGAIN.

The last time they tried a movie, it didn't exactly succeed. Some shows are just more suited to the small screen.

Shaky sets and panto level acting are at home on the small screen.

There was a piece on Radio 4 this morning. The idea is that Hollywood is gagging to find the next auto-win franchise now that Harry Potter is finished. Dr Who could be that franchise. I would agree there is potential there, but there is a danger that Hollywoodizing Dr Who will suck out the spirit of the show.

I can't help remembering it was the American Dr Who TV movie in the 80s that helped off the Doctor.

Would be interesting if it managed to work and they did one doctor to one movie starting at the very beginning though. Of course it leaves a lot of room for butchering.

I'm reminded of this somehow though...

First off, David Yates is a very competent director who did a pretty good job with the last three (and arguably unfilmable) Potter books.

Secondly, they're going to take two to three years on the script. Hopefully this will enable them to come up with a plot that doesn't rely so heavily on Deus ex Machina (something which the Matt Smith storylines have been less guity of).

Thirdly, a brand new cast is an excellent idea. Matt Smith might just about have enough screen prescence for a film, but everyone else is a bit BBC. Anyway, the whole time travel thing makes it perfectly feasible to have multiple versions kicking about.

I definitely think it could work, but that doesn't mean it will. Now, onto wishlisting...

The Doctor (if they're going old) - Ian McKellen
The Doctor (if they're going young) - Tom Hiddlestone
The Assistant (if they go for an American to make it sell) - Amy Adams
The Assistant (if they stick with a Brit) - Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary from Downton Abbey, mainly because I fancy her knickers off at the moment )

Villains - Weeping Angels would have been excellent had the idea been new, but the TV show has kind of used up the concept. But they should go for something clever and original like this anyway. Daleks and Cybermen aren't cinematic enough.

Obligatory cameo from old Doctor Who actor - Tom Baker please!

Finally, for Gods sake, keep the plot simple!

There is nothing to say in the article the series would be "Hollywoodized" specifically. The Harry Potter films were able to be big budget films while keeping a British core to them.

Wow, she could defiently eat crackers in bed and I wouldn't kick her out =o]

Weeping angels though...umm no... honestly for a big budget movie The Final Time war would be a logical place to start. War makes good drama, you can include all the races, Daleks, cybermen, sontatians and just about whatever else you can imagine. You can have heaps of timelords getting there asses handed to them so the Warf effect is there to show how awsome the doctor is.

I totally agree with obligitory old doctor flashback though. Just aslong as Colin Baker doesn't have question mark shaped lapels I should be alright with him...hell talking about Colin Baker lets get Peri (nicola byrant?? i believe) back...shes still yummie looking at 50+ GMILF's all the way.

There *was* an American movie. Movie rumours started in the 90s and had Spielberg attached, it morphed many time until the 1996 film with Paul McGann appeared.

One reason why the New Series was delayed was that the rights were believed to still rest with BBC Worldwide thus preventing a TV series being produced. When looked into this was found to not be an issue so the new TV series was made. The ongoing efforts to produce some sort of 'film' have been inching along since well before 2005.

It's got a director attached, but it's a long way off seeing production IMO.
