Hard to believe that three sets of numbers can determine one's material status in the world. Its so arbitrary and..and....and....I hate Equifax..Exparian...Transunion..who's bright idea was to implement three freaking set of numbers. Its..its....its...my fault really. Couple of the financial institution didn't get my deployment orders before I went over seas. Also use to the fact when its something negative they're spot on to put it in the report and adjust the numbers but if you fix one and "dispute" it its skewers to the left and take 6-9 months to correct itself

Right there with you. I was the victim of identify theft a few years back. Some asshat opened up a gas card in my name, ran up a $300 balance, and me being a young idiot in my early twenties, I never bothered checking my credit score to keep an eye out for suspicious accounts . So, that outstanding gas card dinged my credit for five years unbeknownst to me until I attempted to buy a new car and had one of the three credit scores come back in the low 500's. The other two were in the 720's but guess which score the car dealership was going to use to determine my financing rate?

Jump ahead to when I contacted the credit agency that had the fraudulent card listed in my name (Experian I believe it was) and they were no help in expunging it form my record even though I could prove the card was opened up by someone other than me. They told me they would take the card off my record but that my score would take months to return to normal. You know who was helpful in that whole matter? Chevron. The other victim in the identify theft/fraud case. Their credit card department was extremely polite and sympathetic to my situation, and assisted me in getting through to Experian to get the fraudulent card removed from my credit record--and they were the ones out $300!

Our system sucks.

Oh, and check your credit scores regularly, boys and girls. You never know who is using your name.

Not scores, check your report. It's free to check your report (annualcreditreport.com), checking scores costs money (freecreditscore.com etc).

However, if you ever try to get a loan, or have some other reason for someone to pull your report, you can ask for a copy of your score.
