If in the shooting phase, I wipe out the target unit, can I assault a different unit in the assault phase that was right next to it? Since the rules say that you must assault the unit you shot at, does it...

2. Since the target in the shooting phase is no longer on the table in the assault phase, treat it as if you never shot anything and just assault anyway.
