I don't really know my way around.
So what are the milestones in wow? I've heard of auto-grouping
at a certain level and team pvp at a certain level. When do I expect
that?
And what extra skills and such should I roll with my Gnome Tank?
Any advice (other than don't play) would be welcome. I'm playing
WoW because my brother doesn't have time to play minis. He's
already got guys leveled and such so I figured I'd try to catch up
with him or he'd help me out.

Warriors are harder and less effective as tanks then other classes imo.
They have no heal spell for themselves, and rage is a tricky mechanic imo
Paladins make better all round characters imo.
However that said..
lvl 10, first skill point, auto group, pvp opens up (best to wait till lvl 19, 29, 39 etc for pvp)
lvl 20, first mount, plate armor (I think)
lvl 40, second mount
lvl 60, first flying mount (one talent tree filled out or allmost)
lvl 70, second flying mount
lvl 77, cold weather flying (used to be when I stopped playing)
lvl 80ish, old world flying (I think)
Fury spec is usually best for leveling, protection is for tanking but harder to solo lvl imo.
Mining/skinning pays the bills, pick up one or the other or both
smithing is not really so usefull imo, you need to be maxed out to make any money at it.
Look up warrior builds, there is a new best build everytime the patch comes out.
Your two main stats are strength and toughness/stamina/endurence (I can't remember what its called)
Str affects damage, the other (toughness/endurence) affects health
Also armor is a stat warriors want, however go for minor health/ str increases over minor armor increases everytime
Only roll need on chainmail (when you're low level) and plate items as a warrior. For weapons only roll for axes and swords and maces.
Hitting things and getting hit generates rage, which you use on abilities.
Threat or aggro is how much a mob/monster hates you and prefers to attack you over someone else. Tanks use abilities to generate lots of aggro towords them as opposed to group members.
If you play as a tank you will get more groups, but if you fail once people will hate you and speak evil words that will hurt your feelings.
Tanks use slower one hand weapons that deal higher damage with each swing.
DPS (damage) use faster weapons with lower damage per hit.
Thats a down and dirty version of what I know.
Did he invite you in as a friend?
If so then he got the flying mount and the two of you can get double exp when grouped If I remeber correctly.
Quick note, realisticly, it will be quite hard for you to "catch up" with him, or the rest of the community really without a huge time commitment.
p.s. I didn't spell check this, what you see is what you get
Have fun
Edit
Link with specs (looks like arms is currently the best dps at lvl 85 however it may/may not be the best spec for lvling)
http://www.wowpopular.com/Talents/Warrior
Check this website after every patch once you hit lvl 85, its best to conform or people will make fun of you and not invite you into groups.

He could go fast if he had a healer. I haven't played warrior myself (sticking with leveling as a healer myself when I used to play (holy priest...)), but with a friend playing a warrior as a tank we got into instances pretty easy and that sped us through the levels at a decent pace.
Nothing strengthens your patience like being a healer or a tank and having idiots run head first at everything.

Also download Carbonite Quest helper
http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info12965-Carbonite.html
download, unzip/open folder
drop contents in the wow addon folder
when you log in, at the character select screen click the addon button and make sure they are all selected.
The quest tracker is ace, while the "node" bit is essential for miners as it tracks every mine node you have ever visited
One other thing, once you have one charcter (toon) who is lvl 55 then you can create a death knight that starts at lvl 55.

I'm adding more as I remember, its been awhile since I've played
Np (no problem)
LFG (looking for group)
LFW (looking for work)
OOM (out of mana)
Shift+right-or-left click can link items in chat
Tab (tab key scrolls through nearby enemies)
1-9etc (hot key bar)
brb (be right back)
afk (away from keyboard)
ally (aliance)
Horde (the best faction)
Item rank-> gray (trash) ->white(normal) ->green(uncommon) ->blue(rare) ->purple(epic) ->orange(legendary/mythic/artifact)
Tan colored items are heirloom items.
(various other short hand)
You can go into the option menu and select additional action bars (you will need them eventually), you can also lock action bars to prevent yourself from acidentally dragging them off the bar during combat.
While there are numerious websites out there that style themselves as "wow wiki's" they are pretty much all out of date. Information they give on character builds are usually old and useless.
However websites that act as pure item/quest databases are usually pretty good.
http://thottbot.com/
Google is your best friend, when looking up class information be sure to type the current client build nest to your question.
example,
Warrior fury specs 4.2.2
The number bit changes after every patch. Adding the number bit is only nessisary when looking up builds, quests usually do not change enough from patch to pacth. You can see what the current client is at the login screen
Youtube is usefull for popular addon walkthroughs/trouble shooting
Its a bit sad how much I remember actually...

Question: how hard is it to respec talents? Is the cost
a convenience fee or is it prohibitive? I'm wondering
how expensive it would be to switch between fury
(Grinding) and protection (instancing)

At some lvl you can dual spec, I dont remember what lvl. SO you can effectively run both. I played a Fury warrior and it was alot of fun, and you could piss out damage like crazy. But you have to be careful with that build, because you can get carried away to easily and find yourself dead real fast

Just leveled a prot warrior to 85 and it was easier than all other alts i have leveled. Just quickly victory rush will be your best friend. As long as you can kill things you can stay alive.
When i would tank instances i wouldnt even need a healer casue i could just victory rush myself back to full health.
As far as tanking goes, warriors are much better than any other class IMO. Mainly casue of the mobility they bring but thats a disscusion for a different day.

This is silly! Buttons are not how one escapes dungeons! I would smash the button and rain beatings liberally down on the wizard for playing such a trick!

As soon as you are able in my opinion. It shouldn't become the main part of the game (in my opinion as I like to explore somewhat), though they usually have decent gear in them. But, I'd recommend a friend if possible. It just helps if you have a somewhat reliable healer to keep you up as the random one you get will not always be up to it.
More of a play style thing too I guess, if the healer knows you can be reckless at times, then they can heal accordingly or you'll know how much they can do and back off a little.
The most important thing would probably be figuring how much you can handle without going overboard.

What's the point to world exploration in this world of super fast xp

Probably achievements, pets and background lore mostly. There's also the professions, they give some buffs. Though you can buy the materials to level some of them from the auction house, I'd rather go out, gather them then sell some of them.
There are quite a lot of references out there that may be worth it. I liked the CSI quest line.
Think of it more as a scenic route.

If you do quests efficiently I think you can level faster than doing the same instances over and over, especially when you have to wait round for groups.

Tank = no waiting!
Here's the oddity.
Instancing between quest runs levels me fast. Figuring out at level
quests (as a newbie) is kind of tricky. Think I'm getting the hang of
it though.

I remember playing a tank briefly. I think I was on a low pop server because I still had to wait for healers.

Rush is keeping me alive when questing. It's not so useful in instances.
It surprised me that it didn't work. I'm used to Lotro where the
defeat events trigger no matter who kills the mob.

level 10-60, if you want to burn through, its usually faster to level in instances.
You should get ques very fast as a tank. so no waiting.
60-70 i heard they reduced xp again, so instances might be the way to go again.
The random dungeon finder, you que as what your class role is, auto groups you with others, kicks you into a dungeon, you run it, get loot/xp. Everyone leavers group and repeat.
Usually there is very minimal social aspect just mind numbing grinding.

Hit level 37 today. Alternating between quest grinding and
instancing, but instancing is a ton of fun.
Found out I hate pvp.
Dual specced Arms/Prot now.
I like tanking, but I don't like that druid bear. I have to think
about what kind of second toon I'd want to have in a few months.
Maybe pally tank as an alt.
