If a character has Mindshackle scarabs and a single model unit charges it, proceeds to test for them and fails... Who does he hit if no one else is around?? Is it A) himself. B) it doesnt take effect. Or C) he doesnt make any attacks.

A.) He attacks against his own unit. It just so happens that he comprises the only model in said unit. Cue the taunting phrase, "Why are you hitting yourself?". Laugh.

Side note - Walkers/dreadnoughts are unaffected by mindshackle scarabs. in the BRB under rules for walker vehicles it says they always automatically pass all Leadership tests.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I used this exact line getting a Space Marine Termie to beat himself to death. It was glorious.

Just so I'm clear on this, Mindshackle Scarabs go off every combat phase correct, not just when the model charges, etc.?

Basically - they are mandatory.

Yeah, I'd always kick out a Warrior from any army list in order to make room for Mindshackle Scarabs. Probably the most under-costed piece of wargear.

Seriously, these things are awesome, despite the store ruling that a single model can't attack itself (which I disagree with). In a tournament they held me in combat with a black templars unit, causing their powerfist to attack their unit, caused a tyranid prime to attack his own warriors and led to mephiston losing combat, breaking and fleeing off the board (well, he would have if he didn't roll a 6 for the portal of exile ). All this in three games. It made its points back several times over time and time again.

Since Independent Characters are always their own unit in assault, they have no other option but to attack themselves. The wargear would need to say something like "You cannot choose an Independent Character" if they really weren't supposed to make people attack themselves.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

Also I'm pretty sure mephiston is fearless.

Fearless does not help with Leadership checks. It only automatically passes Morale and Pinning checks, which use the Leadership stat but are not leadership checks.

K, it seems weird that the lord of death isn't fearless but thats fine. I wasn't implying he would be immune to mss but rather he wouldn't have broken from combat were he fearless. The last time I faced him the ba player told me he was fearless so I was going from that.

My apologies.

I think the most glorious moment I had with these things was a pair of overlords charging into a swarmlord. I out right killed the swarm lord before its initiative without swinging a single weapon.

Fearless doesn't go to the things that should have it, in my experience. Necron Flayed Ones, the gibbering insane undead robots that eat flesh? Not fearless. Necron Destroyers, the nihilistic creatures that cannibalise their bodies to make themselves better at killing and want to destroy all life? Not fearless. Mephiston, the Lord of Death? Not fearless.
