If the Emperor returned to his full physical glory, would he accept his new role as God Emperor? Or would he reject it and attempt to restructure the Imperium to what it was before the Heresy? I know the Lectitio Divinatus existed at the time of the heresy, and there were many who thought him a God, but it was not embraced by the emperor. In fact I think he reprimanded some SM for worshipping him as a God, Emperors Children I believe. If he did decide to eliminate religion again would it be Heresy against himself in the eyes of mankind? Now I'm reachin!

IMO there would be a huge schism with part of the imperium holding to the emperor's word as immediate law, and another part declaring the emperor to be an imposter.

Basically, if the big man said "I am not a god. Don't worship me as one" and you'd been stepped on by your 'betters' all your life who commanded you to worship said big man as a god, you would probably jump at the chance to follow the one who would let you shoot the guys who had been standing on top of you your whole life.

I've lost track of the amount of times I've seen this thread. BUT! My search-fu is proving to be weak, so I can't prove it.

My standard response: Big civil war. Imperium as we know it shattered.

Yep, that's why it comes up so often. I was more mentioning because you might find some interesting reading there. However, Dakka's search function and I are not friends.

I'm not a fan of the search function either, really difficult to find anything.

To put it bluntly, sh*t would go down. He would go mental, the Emperor hated the notion of him as a god, so he would go around trying to stop that idea.
But before that, imagine the uproar. 10,000 years of being a corpse and suddenly he's back? The Lords would freak, they're power mad, they don't want him back, the Inquisition would most likely think it's a trick and start a war, a few SM chapters would be in sheer disbelief. The Emperor would have to start from the beginning, if he came back he'd undo more than if he just stayed dead.
I think he'd try to carry on with his plans, but it'd all go wrong and he'd need to start from scratch.
And it was the Word Bearers he gave a slap on the wrists for worshipping him.

People look at this from the perspective that the Emperorer is an idiot, and doesn't know what's been going on.

Remember, he isn't dead, and from time to time has excerted his psychic dominion to others (albiet, VERY rarely), not to mention he has the ability to project himself over multiple planets at once.

In other words, he'd know exactly what to do if he came back. He'd explode the minds of the high lords first of all, then he'd likely have some sort of super miracle to prove who he is, leaving only the inquisition questioning (though the xenos wouldn't, they'd be like "coo', I'll be over here fighting none heretics". )

Don't underestimate how powerful the Emperor is. Only reason Horus got a wack at him is because the Emperor let him. The second Sanguinus died and the emp knew that Horus couldn't be saved, the Emperor instant killed the bastard because yes, he is that freakin' mighty.

The whole Horus V Emperor thing, honestly makes NO FREAKING SENSE when you think about it. The Emperor essentially let the Heresy go on thinking his sons could be redeamed. He could have rode around exploding their heads in a giant gold plated pleasure yaht and prevented them from Warp Travel if he wanted, but he didn't. He let it go on, seeing untold billions (trillions?) die, he saw his other sons get their asses whooped by their brothers, and didn't stop and go "Ok guys, enough is enough" till he saw one get hit with his own eyes.

The most important piece of fluff in all 40K is poorly thought out, poorly written, and just face palm worthy given much thought.

I do agree that the Emperor is the universes worst dad. You would think with all his power he would have the nuts to use it responsibly and in the best interests of the Imperium. I agree he should've smashed the heresy when he could. And I do agree that he would know exactly what to do in the event that he came back to life.

I suspect the Emperor's return could actually be the worst thing that could happen to the Imperium because it would fracture it. One half would follow the Emperor and the other half simply wouldn't. New Horus Heresy scale civil war, blah blah blah.

If the Emperor returned the Imperium will be ripped apart by Civil War, despite all the worshiping he gets the status quo on Terra is very delicate. The bureaucracy of the Adeptus Terra and High Lords wouldn't tolerate losing their power after 10,000 years and you'd probably see the Adeptus Terra (including the Imperial Guard/Navy/Arbites/Mechanicus), Planetary Governors, and Ecclesiarchy going up against the Space Marines and Custodes. The Inquisition itself would be ripped apart by its own mini civil war I imagine as the very serious philosophies within the Inquisition would boil over. Thus don't expect the Inquisition to be much of a player in the grander schism.

Where exactly the Sisters of Battle fit into it would be interesting as they've always been made out to be more noble then the rather corrupt Ecclesiarchy.
