I'm strongly considering starting a Vostroyan blob Imperial Guard as soon as I can establish a bit of free cash because I love the models and I really enjoy painting infantry., I worked through the codex, and came up with this a list that I liked, then I fine tuned it, so that I would not be spending a super duper redonculous amount of cash- (just a very ridiculous amount of cash)

So anyway ya, thats why you see so many bloody heavy bolters, because I want to play Vostroyans, and a heavy bolter comes in the box, so I'll have about a zillion of them. I may have to figure out how to convert them to auto cannons eventually...

CCS- Las Cannon

PCS- 1 Grenade Launcher
IS- Commissar, 2 Power Weapons, Melta Gun, Heavy Bolter
IS-Power Weapon, Melta Gun, Heavy Bolter
HWS- 3 Las Cannon

Vet Squad- Heavy Bolter

I would swap the Vet squad for a second blob as I advanced to 750 and beyond. They are just there to give me 2nd troop to keep things legal. I couldn't remember how many points the Vet Squad heavy bolter / autocannon was, but if its only 10 points I'll put ANOTHER heavy bolter on the PCS instead of the GL. Who knows, at 500-750 points maybe all those HBs won't be totally useless .

So if anybody has any suggestions on how to make this even cheaper while still being good I'd really like to know. Just for reference this is what I'm looking at in US dollars
CCS box [35]
Chain sword Officer [10.75]
4 Vostroyan Firstborn Boxes [140]
4 Las Cannon Teams [69]
1 Commissar [13.25]

Totals $268 I can get everything 20% off so $214.40... and after sales tax $231.07

Its expensive as hell for a 500 point list, averaging just over 2 points per dollar. but it looks like it would be a blast on the table to play. Around 40 infantry, 4 las cannons, and 3 heavy bolters should be able to tackle just about anything I come up against... except venom spam and s6 spam eldar

If you do find a way to convert them in to autocannons this would work better...
CCS- Las Cannon, 2xplasma guns

PCS- 4xflamers
IS- Commissar, 2 Power Weapons, Melta Gun, autocannon, meltabombs
IS-Power Weapon, Melta Gun, Autocannon, meltabombs

Vet Squad- lascannon,3xplasma guns

PIS shouldn't mix Melta and Autocannon, because they serve different purposes. Autocannons are for transports and infantry from a ways off (R48), meltas are for tanks and walkers close up (R12). You'd be better off with a HWS with auto cannons, and drop them from your PIS's.

You should really get on trying to convert those Heavy Bolters to Autocannons, they will serve you infinitely better.

The trouble I'm finding is that each box contains
1 sarg
1 flamer - easy conversion to melta gun
6 lasgun dudes
1 heavy bolter.

This means that by taking heavy weapons OUT of the infantry squads I would need to buy an additional infantry box to get enough las guns, which is another 35 dollars, and I would still have about 5 heavy bolters collecting dust.

Thats also the problem with plasma guns. The flamers in the box look nothing like the Plasma gun models... so I would have to buy each plas gun separately which would quickly drive up cost.

I disagree Zarruk... what do you do if a AV 13 Dread walks up to you? Pray you glance it with your AC? No, you shoot it with the melta gun.

There is range synergy and then there is squad versatility. If you want every squad to have an answer for AV 14, it either has a LC or a melta gun. Melta bombs are pure defensive weapons.

If you want to convert your HBs to ACs, add on a length of plastic to look like a barrel. If your skill with Green Stuff is good, you can make muzzle breaks for the end of the barrels.

GW sells a pack of 5 plasma guns and 5 melta guns...

Blk Tom: I wasn't suggesting he drop the Meltas, but that he keep the Meltas and drop the auto cannons. This way the squad can respond to tank threats and still be mobile. While an Autocannon HWS could focus all of its fire on transports.

Nice to see this bumped, and good timing too, since I just went ahead and purchased a bunch of Vostroyans on Ebay.

It should be enough to play 500 points, especially with a proxy or 2 from my Eldar. (bright lance for a 4th las cannon or something) and a guardian or 2 if I'm a GM short or something.

I look forward to testing this stuff out.

One other question I'm wondering about is how well do Double Power Fist pcs squads work?

One of the officer models in the ebay set comes with a power fist, and as a result i'm wondering how this would work for one of my PCS,

(125) PCS- Commie, 2 PF, Medpack

Gives you 6 models, 6 power fist attacks on the charge, and FNP to help mitigate the low model count. It seems way too expensive points wise but it seems somewhat useful for helping out a blob engaged with tougher enemies?
