So I am going to start running with some lists here using the new Necron Codex that I have been testing and putting together. I am going to start small with a 1000 point list for people who might be starting the army and I will go up to 1500, and then a 2000 list. With each I'll explain why I am chosing each choice I make and why the list is assembled the way it is. Pretty straight forward stuff!
Necrons - 1,000 points
Starting off, 1000 point games are all about chosing really effective, well costed units so that you can field a sizeable, high damage force that can still get the job done.
HQ
Imotekh the Stormlord
Troops
9 x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance, Solar Pulse
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldrich Lance
9 x Warriors w/ Gauss Flayers
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance
Fast Attack
4 x Canoptek Wraiths w/ 2 Whip Coils
Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge
Annhiliation Barge
Total: 1005 points
Reasoning/Tactics
Imotekh is too good a value @ 1,000 points to NOT take. He's the highest value HQ in the Necron Codex and he gives you a TON for his price. Imotekh goes in the Immortals unit, and gives them Relentless. At 1,000 points if Imotekh's lightning even does a little damage, it is a huge gain for your army since any loss by your opponent at 1,000 points is going to cost them more dearly than in high points.
Relentless S5 AP4 Immortals generate some mobile scoring threat. Warriors are there to screen out your Immortals.
Anti-Tank comes from the combination of Crypteks Eldritch Lances, Wraiths + Rending, and Annhiliation Barges. My reasoning behind not putting any kind of scarab or spyder here was because people really don't run a lot of AV 13 and AV 14 @ 1,000 points. You'll probably be facing a lot of AV 10/11. Which means you can assault and shoot down a lot of vehicles using your firepower pretty fast.
Anti-Horde comes from troops and the Annhiliation Barges. Wraiths are there as vehicle crackers, and assault after a unit has been whittled down a little by various other shooting elements in the army.
List Variants
I wouldn't recommend deviating too far from list just due to it being really optimized for efficiency. Meaning I chose the Necron units that were specifically designed to give you the best bang for the buck -- since we don't have many points to spare. You could swap your Heavy Support Barges out into a Monolith if you really want to WOW your opponent with AV 14 @ 1,000 points. If it gets melta'd right off the table, I warned you.
You crazy Scarab-maniacs could likely do something like this:
HQ
Imotekh the Stormlord
Troops
9 x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance, Solar Pulse
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldrich Lance
9 x Warriors w/ Gauss Flayers
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance
Cryptek - Harbinger of Destruction, Eldritch Lance
Fast Attack
7 x Canoptek Scarab Swarms
5 x Canoptek Scarab Swarms
Heavy Support
3 x Canoptek Spyder
But seriously ask yourself if you want to lose the awesomeness of Wraiths and all the firepower of 2 barges (12 high strength shots) for an environment that isn't as heavily mechanized as higher cost lists. With all the Scarab hate right now, your opponent is going to likely target those Scarabs first, and with how easy they get blown apart by templates, it is a huge risk to take in a low points game.
If you are facing an Assaulty army:
HQ
Nemesor Zahndrekh
Troops
9 x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
Necron Lord w/ Warscythe, Mindshackle Scarabs
5x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
5x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
Elites
15 x Flayed Ones
Varguard Obyron
Heavy Support
Annhiliation Barge
This army is small for 1,000 points but has highly mobile Tesla Immortals. Nemesor Zahndrekh's ability to buff and debuff, and a nasty squad of Varguard Obyron and Flayed Ones. Nesmor joins a squad, gives the Immortals a rez orb, and with the Lord + Nemesor, they become a unit that can (at least on paper) survive a pretty nasty assault from a CC unit. The other squads -- just don't get caught. Don't forget about Barge w/ Tank Hunter.
