Hello, Dakka. So, I went to Games Workshop on Wednesday, and was building up some of my Deathwing. So, I forgot to look at my Codex (unfortunatley) and accidently put the Crux Terminatus shoulderpad on wrong. (opposite side) So, someone, about 14 years old came up, looking at my Deathwing. He then gets pretty upset that I put them on the opposite side. He then lectures me about not putting it on is bad, fluff doesn’t make sense, etc. So, is this really a big deal?

I went threw that phase once. "Everything has a place and everything in it's place." Good times.

No, it's not a big deal. If I were judging some sort of golden demon level painting competition, I might dock you a bit unless it somehow was a purposeful conversion but it's completely anal and not-any-of-your-business for some random kid to spazz out about it.

Just say your Marines are actually from the Angels of Darkness chapter. Their first company, the Wings of Death, have their shoulderpads like that.
You're playing Space Marines, the most plentiful soldiers in the galaxy... chances are, there is a chapter out there that does what you do.

Doubtedly, since that was just an example made up on the spot. Honestly, I'd just pop them off and stick them on the other side. There's a notch I guess you'd call it on the side that should be facing outwards.
