What is your story about when a unit of yours got its point value many tims over in a moment or throughout a battle? Like if a unit of guardsman slayed a hive tyrant with lasguns :p

For me, it was a heavy weapon squad of 3 mortars. Somehow this squad killed 5 dire avengers, a farseer wound, and the squad to be pinned on turn 1. Turn 2 came and they routed some guardians! They went on to cause more daage in the game safely out of line of sight. Not bad for 60 points!

Oh the Dice Roll, you're a cruel cruel mistress.

And gets rid of tactical value in a game considering a lucky roll can screw too many things up and causes for people using the same repeated units over and over. But I digress.

Read on another forum (or maybe it was this one) of a Wych killing off, by herself, a Master of the Ravenwing.

10 pts vs some large number, woooo

Prince Yriel. Squad died and left an empty Wave Serpent. He took that transport and drove it right into the center of the IG mech gunline. It bumped into a Chimera and was promptly blasted to pieces. He hid behind the wreck while the rest of the army advanced through the fire, pretty much dying or pinned to a forest.

He jumped out from behind the wreck into a heavy weapon team in a ruin, killing all but one and saving him from fire during the next turn. He then killed the heavy weapon team and assaulted a Chimera blowing it up, the explosion killing the vets inside of it. He hid behind the wreck out of LoS again. The following turn he charged into a Leman Russ squadron (only two of the plasma ones) and was able to touch and hit both. One blew up the other became a wreck. By this point he had two wounds left and a melta vet chimera had finished retreating across the map to deal with his badassery.

He charged and blew up the chimera killing all but a lone sergeant and suffering one wound. The sergeant aimed his bolt pistol and executed Yriel.

Something like 500-700 points for one 155 point model.

The tactics are taking into account these odds and adapting to bring them to your favor. Such as how normal tactics do not rely on a plan working 100% and will have redundant backup strategies to use in case of failure.

What could be done of a blast template unit getting a few lucky rolls and obliterating a massive chunk of your army? A unit that shoots over anything, hits in a wide area, and has a large range? Counter blast template? Doesn't exactly help when you're dudes are already dead.

Dice rolls are good and all, but they can be ridiculous, way to ridiculous, and you can't really plan for heavy point units being made redundant by something they have no way of dealing with.

Ripper Swarms taking down an Imperial Guard command squad. Unfortunately this was just a victory I happened to witness. From the wrong end of the table. We have never played doubles together since.

Cover, spreading units to reduce the amount touched by templates, distraction, counter assault etc. There is no negation, only mitigation.

For me, it might have to be with my Basilisk. Taking out 10+ guys with one shot. That or my LR Punisher with 20/ S 5 Shots. I wiped out 4 of 5 of my buddies Terminators with it before. That was fun.

But my friend with the Termies, one time he wiped out like 40 of my guards men with them. Just kep consolodating after consolodating and killing and killing and I could never attack him cuz my suads were always in CC. NEVER will i group so many guys together.

At a tournament waaaaaaay back in '04;

IG Priest w/eviscerator + rosarius = 90 pts. He managed a very impressive kill tally, made all the more awsome because it was all in the assault phase!

In game 1, he killed:
1 Chaos Dreadnought (157pts for an assaulty, av13 slaanesh nutter!)
IG platoon command squad in the resulting explosion! (90pts for an iron discipline & PF officer, medic & 2x meltas)

In game 2, he killed:
1 SW Venerable Dread (170 pts)
4 Blood Claws in the resulting explosion. (just shy of 60pts)
IG platoon command squad (again!) in the resulting explosion. (so that same 90pts)

In game 3, he killed:
1 Penitent Engine (80 pts)
of corse, to keep his record on track, the 6" explosion also netted me another dead pile of;
That poor, poor command squad yet again! (90 more pts)
Heroic Senior Officer + com squad w/PF, discipline, medallion crimson refractor field, banner, flamer, master vox & medic (171 pts)
6 guardsmen from an infantry squad resulting in half pts and loss of scoring capability (42 pts)

No other sisters were harmed as my opponent made all 9 of his saves... What really made the moment though was Phil Kelly standing over my shoulder and offering some helpfull advice, "As your friend, I can tell you that the objective of 40k is to kill the other guy's army and not your own."
At least I got a free pint for the laughs!

Still, that has to be the best 90pts I've ever spent since in 3 games he killed;
- 463 pts worth of enemy models
- 483 pts of my own models...

Just yesterday I had a game where my Chaos Dreadnought took a lucky potshot at a Land Raider across the table and blew it up on turn 1. Had a similar moment years back with my Space Wolves blowing up a Monolith with a venerable dread too.

In a more entertaining story, I once had a unit of 11 Grots + slaver shoot and charge a 10 man squad of Terminators. I cause an inordinate number of wounds with shooting and actually kill one. They charge, and hit before all the powerfists. I swing and cause 6 wounds. My buddy rolls 6 saves and 5 1s come up. 43 points of grots killed over 200 points of the Emperor's finest.

Many years ago, I was playing a game of apocalypse... 10k vs 10k.

I was fielding 3 full armored companies of imperial guard (a baneblade company, a russ company, and a mechanized company), against my opponents large Chaos army.

I sent my HellHammer Baneblade right down the enemies throat, driving it way out in front of the rest of my army. It did some good damage, but when he got terminators with chainfists in hand to hand with it... it went nuclear.

As it was in the middle of his army... he lost well over half of his army to the resulting blast. I don't remember exactly what he lost, but I do remember the cleanup was easy afterwards.

I had a boomgun wipe out 20 necron warriors over the course of a game. Next time I played that guy, he sacrificed a 220 point unit to destroy the boomgun.
