Hey just grabbed some warp spiders and am wondering if they are worth it.
They seem good with those str 6 deathspinners and the ability to jump in the assault phase (with risk but hey im cool with that)

Vs vehicles they seem lackluster with Ap- making a -1 on the vehicle damage chart, but i think they'd work alright vs infantry and their heavy armor makes them durable too.

What are your guys opinons on them?

P.S. Also whats the better load out for the exarch? more shots or an ap1 pinning? i was leaning more towarads the ap1 as that causes pinning and actually makes wrecking a vehicle easier.

-2 on the damage chart, and yep their pretty much the shooting version of striking scorpions - they eat light-medium infantry

Well, I did crazy things with Warps Spiders. Once, I played vs Nids and when the fast moving bugs had almost reached my front ranks, the Warp Spiders moved 12'' into the swarm, shot a Warrior brood a bit further back and then moved into a building behind the swarm. My opponent got nuts and I had a great laugh.

If you've got points spare, they can be a good harassment unit with power blades and withdraw, the exarch strikes first more often than not and can take a strip off a dev squad or long fangs squad, then break off to shoot and then re engage- tricksy indeed. The upgrades however are quite expensive when you stack them up. I'd also recommend taking the extra death spinner as the maths show that the extra shots are better in almost all occasions. Otherwise, power blade aside, then can do well against MCs and rear armour light vehicles for sheer volume of fire. A squad of 7 with an extra ds on the exarch will average a couple of wounds a turn on a carnifex or equivalent t6 3+ monster and around 3 or 4 penetrating hits on av 10. Even with the modifier this should put most stuff out of action for a turn, if not permanently.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the eldar fast attack slot in general and these guys are my faves, they combine a little more versatility than hawks and are definitely less fragile than sited those or vypers.

I own 30 of them. They are good at everything. You won't kill land raiders, but you will take rhino's razorbacks, chimera's and lighter armor vehicles without breaking a sweat.

I personally kit them out for the extra shots, more shots is better than a single shot with an ap value

Yes, but that is situational. Nothing to do with the weapon itself. It does have -1 from being AP - .

Not that I know of.

I like them, especially when playing with low points. If you use them right with their assult phase jump, they have incredible survivability. At the same time they eat away at the opponents troops. In matches from 1500 points on it kinda loses its impact. My opinion, at least.

I love my Spiders. The AP- doesn't make them totally ineffective against light vehicles and against rear armour. They have so many shots at good BS and S that they still pop tanks reliably. They work wonders against light infantry but still kill a fair few MEQs each phase. As long as you are good with the range and stay away from fleeting and long-range assault-type weapons you can reliably keep out of range.

The math-hammer on the Dual Spinners show them to kill more MEQs than the Spinneret Rifle against anything but FNP. Takes advantage of the Exarch's improved BS too.

They're pricey but I love them. Very flexible and quick too. Hit and run can win you games by getting you somewhere to contest.

Well, I like my Spiders. But at the moment, they hit the shelf. Its a semi-competitive unit, hands down.

Are they?

Let's look at the current meta out there.

First, All Power Armor Armies. Ok, no change. They are who we thought they were.

Next IG. AV 12+ is NO GOOD for warp spiders. However the juicy insides of those tanks shred under the death spinners. Thankfully, they are who we thought they were.

Dark Eldar. Hmmm, nearly army wide T3 with FNP? Negatory! AV 10 open topped transports? Ka-boom! T3 Beast packs that eat everything alive. ID you multi-wound crittens!

Necrons. OK, S6 AP- vs AV 13 is futile. But 4+ save troops vs S6 AP - is win city! OH NO Scarab swarms are going to eat my super tough Wave Serpents! Not so fat, more ID!

Nids: S6 is pretty good for crowd control and MC wounds. Do it man.

Orks: They have to be supported and used as either the first volley or the last one, but they shred the boys.

They are expensive, and if you are not careful, they will die if you zot them in beside the enemy, but they can be very useful if protected properly. Guide them and they really shred goons.

In Beil-Tan High Command, plotting the destruction of the Mon-Keigh.

I only used war spiders once amd it was to deepstike behind a defiler and rip it to pieces then attempt to jump for cover. Next turn they killed 4 khorne beserkers (there were 5 guys and an exarch with dual spinners for a total of 6) they took another two down in assault then got mauled.

Overall they were ok to use but took up too many points imo.

I probably did get the idea for the subject line from you darkhorse, haha.

But thanks guys, this advice is awesome. so i'll run them with the dual spinnerets on the exarch for more shots. And i suppose vs tanks number of shots outweigh the -1 on the vehicle damage chart.

Im gunna try swapping out my striking scorpions in my list in favor of warp spiders and see how they go. I didnt really think about it till it was posted here but they do have assault weapons and a 3+ armor save, so they could shoot and enemy unit then assault it just to tie it up. (will avoid grey knights though).

And thank you muchly Master melta, bringing up the points on why they are good vs the different armies was great and showed me that they will be good in a take-all-comers list.
