so each vanguard veteran could take a storm shield and power weapon making the squad cost 275 points.

sanguinary guard is base cost of 200.

sanguinary guard sucks no? the VV would have much much much more survivability. like over double.

best option is to just give ever model possible a storm shield?

thats a horrible shield.

the vanguard vet would still have half the survivability of a sanguinary guard against bolter fire, and has much worse weapons as well.

Sanguinary guard are NOT useless, they just require more skill than point and click.

what are you talking about?
they would all have a 3+ invuln save, 3+ power armour save and then put a priest with them for FNP.

you say they would fall from bolter fire? good luck. lol. much worse weapons? not really, all they lack is the reroll or whatever. big deal.

you didn't specify a priest would be with them....

sorry, I missed the power swords bit, but your points cost is way off in that case. They are 325 points then.

And they are STILL half as survivable against small arms as sanguinary guard... they are 1/6 fail rate vs sanguinary guard at 1/12 fail rate, if both have a priest.

i agree that sang guard are a finesse unit. but the 2+ save is generally better than a 3+ save in any situation. granted the vets can get an invuln save but will die more than the sang guard will to small arms fire even with the addition of FnP

115 base cost
+100 for the shields
+60 for the power swords (sergeant comes with one for free)

275

ya i guess youre right - more vulnerable against bad weapons... and what about good weapons?

Trying to turn VV into SG clones is throwing away the strength of the VV. Vanguards exist to intercept threats to the meat of your army. Sanguinary Guard exist to go forth and murder your opponent's Troops, removing the opportunity for him to win any sort of objective based game.

By the way, if you want a pimped out assault squad, despite it being a waste of one of your best short ranged firepower units, Honour Guard are a great choice, since they come with a FNP/FC bubble that isn't an IC.

actually you could give them all melta pistols... that might even be better.
