There are many necron models that can be built as two thing. do you guys think it would be possible to use magnets to switch out the parts when necessary? this applies to the vehicles as well.

A magnet is like Duct Tape to us Wargamers... It can do anything. O_O
On a serious note you should be able to magnetize them, just get small enough magnets. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I can tell you from my work this afternoon that the magnets I use for terminator arms (0.125" x 0.063") are just barely small enough to work with the Tesla Cannon on the Annihilation Barge.

And another question, where would you buy magnets small enough to work?

k&J magnetics have nice inventory, and for my part my first ark is magnetized to fit as both doomsday and ghost, with 1/8X1/4 earth magnet and it works fine

well id say both place and weight, cause the "rib cage" part is a heavy one and the cannon too, so 2 per join and holding pretty well, have to say that my earth magnet are the 52 kind tho, so stronger, but pretty sure regular are fine

Yes, it can be done. Check out miniwargaming dot com, they have a couple of videos up already on magnitizing the ghost ark.
I personally mag a LOT of my models, and am planning the same for the ark...(now, not sure if I will ever run them however).
Best of luck!

Heya,
K&J definitly have nice inventory and very strong magnets! (the N52)
You can find really nice advanced tutorial here (pics and vids) that can help you to magnetize your models :

I don't know if you can find magnets small enough to make it worthwhile to do weapon swaps for individual Necron troopers but the vehicles should be workable. Even if a single magnet isn't enough, you might be able to use a brass rod for support and magnets to hold the two pieces together during play.
