Subject: How should I start FOW?

I'm getting quite interested in FOW and want to start a German army. I don't think I'll ever touch Battlefront's models until they completely redo all the infantry (they look like gak). I came across this: http://theplasticsoldiercompany.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_22_24_50&products_id=212 and the models from PSC look alright. Would this be a good way of starting FOW? Can I make a good army out of it, and roughly how many points?
I saw some other newbie FOW threads where people have been recommending the Open Fire set, but I don't really want to get it because I will be buying the full rulebook.

The PSC models suffer from having a lot of the same poses, and parts that are way too thin for gaming models.
Many of the models you see on a PSC sprue are in exactly the same pose as another, just with a slight variation in uniform or gear (a cap instead of a stahlhelm). This was a huge disappointment to me.
The PSC sprue also doesn't come with common stuff like panzershreks or panzerfausts. Just rifles, SMGs, and light MGs.
To be honest, while they work great to represent the common and numerous things like the Grenadierkompie troops, if you player Panzergrenadiers or any of the better equipped units, you're better off going Battlefront or one of their other competitors that include all the equipment.
The PSC vehicles are pretty good though, very good models although again some parts suffer from being too thin for gaming models, but worth the price regardless.

PSC is quite adequate. The vehicles are quite good, and you get a lot for your money, both on infantry and armor (roughly half-price).
You can't build an armylist from PSC only, since their list isn't complete. But you can get an army list that is a whole lot cheaper than Battlefronts and the quality, IMO, is not that much of a difference, not when comparing prices.
If you manage to build a complete and usable list from PSC-only, I think it wouldn't be a very versatile army.

Add some ballast, to PSC vehicles and the plastic infantry is fine unless you are a heavy handed oaf.
I have lots of different vehicles, but I find BF quality too variable. PSC keeps the vehicle quality high, you can then convert for variety and you get some nice spares from PSC sprues. Best value for money, after that Forged in battle isn't bad if you want cheap support platoons (mortars and HMG and AT guns for about 5-7 quid).

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

So far I've bought units from all three companies mentioned above.
PSC stuff is you get what you pay for, really. The mould quality and consistency for the infantry is fine, and in one box of germans you get probably enough for three platoons of grenadiers (though I think I mucked mine up and only ended up with two.)
The tanks are very nice; the PZIV's come with options to build F2, G or H varients and there are a few extra spare wheels and track parts to personalise the models.
As for Forged in Battle, I picked up a pair of 88's (well, that's one box set) and a machine gun platoon from them. The HMG's don't come with a command team which I still need to rectify, and neither do the 88's which is also missing the field car. For now I'm using a Zvezda halftrack for that purpose. The 88's in fact come with enough guys to up the unit strength to 8 guys per gun, which is a bonus. The HMG teams also seem to come in a greater variety of poses to the Battlefront ones. Detail-wise, the FIB units are similarly chunky and cartoonish like the battlefront mini's when compared to PSC guys but certainly about as well detailed.
The Battlefront HMG team I bought, like I said, don't have so many poses but do come with the requisite command section and some lovely bases. Ah, that reminds me. PSC and FIB minis don't come with bases; the tanks do, but they're actually moulded to them in one piece.
Hope this sheds some more light.

Tons of companies offer 15mm WW2, Peter Pig, FOW, Essex etc. Just take your pick and then bulk up your vehicles cheaply using the PSC 15mm ones.

Right now there are no companies that make 15mm plastic infantry other then PSC that I know of. That said, Will has said he will make the special weapons packs in 15mm eventually, though I imagine that with tanks selling so well he will do those first.
That aside he is coming out with Panthers and you can make a German armor list out of PzIv's and Panthers that isnt bad. Later if you want foot you can add it. At the top of the page there is a post that has links to lots of other manufactures that make miniatures in addition to BF. I can suggest Gaming Models (his new stuff anyway) though make sure you wash the models really well before painting them or the releasing agent from the molds prevents the paint from sticking.
Also pure tank lists can look really sharp, and its nice that if your enemy isn't set up to fight armor then much of his stuff does nothing to you.
