Hello, I was looking through my White Dwarf Collection, thinking about the little facts I know about GW, WD and 40K, when I noticed something out of place...

I'd been told by people on- and offline and/or led to assume since I started collecting that GW (and as a result WD) tended to cycle 40K and Fantasy as the focussed system each year (ie y1 40K, y2 F, y3 40K and so on), and that 40K was the more popular game (in my eyes it's scifi, kids like that, and it's cheaper to build an army in 40K, but I might be wrong - Fantasy's not my strong point). Looking over my collection, that seems to have derailed big time. I don't have the exact figures to hand, but I know the major systems of each year.

I count Space Hulk, Dreadfleet etc in its parent franchise, so 40K and Fantasy respectively. Fine/Failcast (you call) would be put in a separate category along with LOTR.

I've been collecting them since August 2006, but I won't count the '06 issues as that's not a complete year, but I think it was more Fantasy and LOTR.
2007: Mainly 40K
2008: Even amounts of 40K and Fantasy
2009: Mainly 40K (Post-rules update)
2010: Mainly Fantasy
2011: Incomplete, but so far (and rumoured December) mainly Fantasy

If what I've heard is true, next year will be strongly 40K, but by my logic that means the 2013 will be as well.

Are these just mindless ramblings, or can someone put some order to it? Or shed some light?

It always seemed balanced to me. Even amounts of LOTR, W40K, WHFB... but then again I don't have most issues of WD.

Inside each individual WD, yeah they've been fairly balanced in the past, at least the Warhammers have, not so much LOTR.

I meant the balance of which system has a faction that takes the spotlight for each issue, like Grey Knights, Finecast Release, Dreadfleet - that kind of balance

I would say this has been a Fantasy year while 2009 was definitely a 40k year. 2012 is allegedly seeing the new edition of 40k, so it should be a 40k year. One can only assume they'll ride that out into 2013. I think it's a pretty even divide between Fantasy and 40k with LotR just kind of there for good measure.

Would 2013 be an LOTR year because of the Hobbit films coming out around it?

I don't know, Hobbit has me pretty interested (but I doubt it'd get more than both of the main game systems)
