A friend of mine has recently acquired some terrain and has asked me to paint it for him. Included were the building's from the 3rd edition starter set, some plastic tree's, a crashed aquilla lander, and some battlefield accessories. I figured since I have an airbrush, and he asked politely(and offered to pay me) I would do it for him. Everything was still on spue, so that meant I had to assemble it first(which I don't mind, I love to build things).

While I was building the ruins I decided I would try using some textured paints on the ruins, hoping that it would had some nice effects with airbrushing. So I went out to Walmart to take a look at any paints they may have. Unfortunatly they only had two textured spray cans, one of which was green, the other was a black, both which had a "textured shimmer" finish to them. I figured I'd buy them anyway and test them out on sprue first. I also picked up a can of black, and smoke grey(which is almost the same colour as the unprimed plastic). After I came home I tried out each can on a piece of spruem and the results were promising. The texture was not too "thick"(kind of similer to a fine grit sandpaper) and the colours were okay as well. The textured black ended up slightly mettallic but that;s not a problem as I have matte black spray I can cover it with if need be, while the textured green was nice and dark, and not shiny at all.

I used the textured black spray can for the first coat, followed by the matte black over the entire building, so that there was no "shiny" parts showing. After I let that dry I used the grey spraycan to add some highlighting from the top. Following that I did some more black from the bottom, and then some more grey at the top. I'd alternate this a few times with a light spray, at a fair distance so I was merely "misting" the ruins. This way I achieved a nice blending of black and grey. After that I used some of my GW paints in my airbrush to get the brown dirt stains on the bottom of the ruins.

Very nicely done I must say. I don't think I have nearly enough patience for all of those different coats.

Horst is right, using an air brush / spray cans it dosn't take much time to paint many coats, unless you thin your paints too much, then it takes too long to dry(longer then if you had useda heavy wash on something). But it's a lot of fun to see you paint almost instantaneously dry(assuming you don't use too much water/thinner).

Okay so here's what everyone wants to see, this is the next piece of terrain I'm working on for him right now; the crashed Aquila Lander.I want the wreck to look like it's been there for a while, and is starting to rust, and if you've ever felt rusted metal. So I plan on doing a TON of weathering on the lander, and make the paint appear faded and have fusty metal showing through in spots as well. I also plan on having the dirt around the lander have some grassy patches, and since I have some flock I do not use for my stuff, I'll probably add a little bit to the terrain piece later on. After cleaning up the mold lines I used my textured black spray to give it some texture(to help with the weathered feel later on).

Next I did a coat of Necron Abyss with my airbrush, unfortunatly I thinned my paint a little too much, so I had to leave it overnight to dry fully, but I'm happy with the results. It came out a bit brighter then I expected, and took on a mettallic shine, but that will go away with the other colours I will be adding.

My next colour I used was Mordian Blue, which I did more of a ligth airbrushing coat on this one. I still wanted the Necron Abyss to show in the recesses and on parts of the flat surface so without further banter, here is the next pic.

So I after my gaming session against a friend this afternoon I came home and did an other layer on the lander, this time Ultramarines blue.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So here's an other little update on the lander. Here I've added some Fenris Grey. I didn't do a full coat as I wanted to leave some blue, and make it look like the paint's been fading.

Here's a close-up of one of the pieces.

Next I tried some Space Wolves Grey, but I couldn't seem to get it to work well. I'm not sure if my paint pot is just from a bad batch, or perhaps the pigments in this colour are not fine enough for the brush. My first thought was that it was drying too fast as it came out blotchy, so I took apart my brush and did a full clean, but the problem still persisted, even after mixing(thinning) a new batch. You can kind of see where my problem was witht he smallest piece. After this I tried using Astronomicon Grey instead, and it seemed to work much better for me. Here is the next shot of my progress.

Soon it will be time to start working on an other colour other then he blue's(and blue grey's)

Well I've done a little more work. I've used painters tape to mask off area's of the terrain that I don't want overspray to come onto for this next part. Then after the black spray, I've done some more masking, and did the brown for the mud.

Next I'm going to wash the terrain, then I have some brushwork to start on.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've finally gotten around to taking the masking off the lander, and I've learned one thing, my masking job is not perfect. If you look closely at the following image you will notice some black, green, and brown where it dosn't look liek it fits. But I can easily tidy that up with some brushwork. And yes, I am going to weather and dirty up the black a fair deal.

As was mentioned by Artimage, I have been in the process of moving and at the moment still do not have my painting area set up. Hopefully I will have that ready soon.

Impatience grows, so I become an impatient, sad faced and crankied jerk. Only difference from normal? The sad face-ness.
Okay, I'm done with the silly crankyness. I'm very excited for your paint station to be set up and see what's changed, and what it's going to wind up looking like. APPRECIATIONS!!!

Hey everyone. I saw the work done so far by Thaanos the other night at a party at his place. The pictures he has up do not do the pieces justice. I can't wait for him to get his painting station set up and doing more. It's looking really good so far. He needs to get a camera that can take "macro" shots for the real detail to be seen. If I get the chance to in future, I'll take the shots for him to post here.

So Yes, it's been a while since I've posted. I recently moved(well about two months ago) and havn't had much time to work on anything, but I finally got some time over the past day to do a little work. What I've done since my last post was painting the metallic area's, followed by a metallic drybrush over the entire lander, and then finally an area wash of Devlan Mud with my airbrush.

Right now I'm waiting for some paint to dry, and working on the stone bits off to the side, then going to add some more layers to the dirt. I'll keep posting as I have more to show. Now that I'm almost all set up at my new place, I do have a place t paint, even though it's not the ideal hobby space.
