CAIRO – Three young Americans were reportedly arrested in Cairo on suspicion of throwing Molotov cocktails at security forces during ongoing protests.

Egyptian state TV showed footage of the three young men who were reportedly arrested Monday near Tahrir Square after being accused of taking part in street battles with security forces.

The US embassy in Cairo was unable to confirm the arrests but said it was aware of the reports.

"There have been a number of reports of Americans being detained, and we are currently looking into that," David Lynfield, a spokesman at the embassy told NewsCore.

The Americans were enrolled at the American University in Cairo.

Fellow students in Egypt identified the three on Twitter, and appealed directly to US lawmakers for help in freeing them. The three were named as Luke Gates of Bloomington, Ind., Derrik Sweeney of Northridge, Calif., and Greg Porter of Pennsylvania. The identities could not be independently confirmed.

The television pictures showed the three young men lined up against a wall and a table with several ID cards, including an Indiana driver's license.

"The three boys were throwing Molotov cocktails and had no passports on them when they were picked up," CNN quoted Adel Saeed, a spokesman for Egypt's general prosecutor's office, as saying.

Protests have raged since Saturday around the iconic square, the center of the revolution that brought down the former president Hosni Mubarak in February, leaving 26 people dead.

A major protest was set to take place later Tuesday in the square. The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) was locked in crisis talks with a number of political groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood.

I can understand the Egyptians protesting, but why go if your an American? :S

No wonder the Egyptians are so happy staying out in tents in the city, if my house was made out of camel gak I think id prefer to go camping as well!

Three independent, non-militants making explosive devices and throwing them at security forces in another country get arrested.

Nah. The OWS crowd would probably label these three "troublemakers" as promoting the US' attempts to create a New World Order or some other nonsense.

I haven't seen the egyptian military giving up their shooters from the last one they had....
