I collect necrons but I'm not getting an apocalypse size army so I'm already thinking of a second army. I need to choose between:

Eldar
Daemons
Grey knights
Black templars
Chaos space marines

I'm leaning towards either Eldar, daemons or grey knights. Any advice? My gameplay style is either blast them to oblivion or hack them to oblivion.

Necrons rule!
Orcs also rule!

Only get Eldar if you aren't planning on allying them for APOC any time soon, or ever for that matter. Necrons hate Eldar, they are bitter enemies.

The first question is what draws you to any army? The fluff? The minis? The rules? The cheese? The nostalga?

Why did you choose necrons? The ease in painting mass minis? The really new and shiny dx'? The relatively 'hot' new minis? If anything, what do you dis-like about your necrons? Or do you love them?

If you dis-like them, get some MEQ list or that DEQ. Preferably not chaos, they aren't due an update and they look rather rusty ATM. That is if you are buying them for their rules anyway. Templars aren't amazing, but make a nice list. Greys have the obvious problem of people just saying, "No, I don't want to play with such a creeper." Deamons are nice if you like to stick the eye out of that guard player who loves that cheese plasma Leman Russ that uses 6 plasma cannons. Yay for millions of 5+ invuns'. And they have some pretty odd yet cool deep striking rules, too.

If you love the way Crons' feel, go for Eldar. They have a rather hard to paint miniature range if you like a challenge though their Dx does need an update. Though they have some old super cheese combos that can put them back in the game if you do your homework. I think the new Necrons are rather similar to the Eldar. Though they are slower and rely less on ridiculous cheese combos.

If you like the necron colour scheme, then of course Grey Knights might be your thing. They are fun, but it makes it slightly harder to get a game.

Or you can do the old 'count as' trick if you want outdated minis like eldar or chaos yet you want Templar or Knight rules?

Buy what looks pretty and models that you feel you will enjoy modelling and painting the most.

I say this because I find that modelling and painting is far more important to me. I can play and have fun with any army but there are some armies I have more fun painting and some I hate painting.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Amen to that.

Depends on your personal tastes. But that is a rather common reply.

Moreso that you have to build and paint whatever you buy. You can make a workable list from any codex. You can't force yourself to enjoy painting models you don't like.

Black Templars.

Consider this your Induction by the High Marshal.

Go Eldar! They've got a great mini range and are pretty strong if you know how to use them. Plus, if early rumors are to be believed, they're gonna be one of the first sixth edition codexes.

Eldar shenanigans are the best shenanigans!
