Hey Dakka, I've just begun putting together my first 40k army (a homegrown IG regiment), and I was at my local hobby shop when I noticed that all of the Chaos minis/vehicles where marked with a $10-$20 discount. Now I haven't really payed much attention to Chaos (evil usually isn't my thing), but at these prices I could have a playable army in about half the time and for half of the cost of my IG army. So I'm asking you Dakka! Whats your opinion on the matter? Should I hold out and slowly build my dream IG army or should I spring for the discounted Chaos models and get to gaming as soon as possible?

Jeez, where do you live?! Lucky....and yes, get the chaos. If you don't want to play chaos, trade it to people for IG stuff of equal value.

Most likely because just after (or maybe before) the 6th edition or SOME time next year i heard early to mid there will be a new chaos codex! SO if i was you i wouldnt bother or you might find half ur army isnt playable in 6 months, i like the look of chaos aswell but i chose to wait till then.

Thanks for contributing guys! Oh and timetowaste85 I live clear over in Ohio. The guy who runs the shop said he has a couple "crates" of Chaos units in the back of the store. No one buys them apparently.
Orkywolf has a sixth edition been announced already? I just now got my hands on the fifth edition rules!!!

Well ive heard several people and i think its certain that 6th edition was coming out some time next year, i was gonna buy 5th edition but the shop owner said 6th editions coming out soon next year, but 5th edition isnt a total loss theres alot of entertaining fluff and painting stuff in there.

Oh well I suppose I should have seen it coming. At least I'll get a few months use out of this edition right? As such I'll probably stick with my original idea for an IG army even though Chaos was tempting.

Yes you should do and the basic rules should stay the same but they are changing a bit such as the phases now go Consult, movement, Assualt, shoot, then some other new one.
BUT theres a new chaos codex coming out as well apparently some time next year and that could be real kick ass so personally i would wait until then until you kick chaos out of the picture unless you really really want IG

Well Chaos was more of a spur of the moment thing because I saw the discounted units at my hobby shop. If I have to wait that long to play an army I wasn't after in the first place I'll just stick to IG. I'll probably pick some of the Chaos up though, just to keep my options open.

Rumors point to 6th edition being in July. Chaos should be just before or just after that, going by the same rumors. What models were going for 10-20 bucks off? I feel like shops only do that with old stock that hasn't shifted. Buying up some Chaos stuff now while it's cheap and waiting out til the new codex isn't the worst choice either.

Well Brother SRM, I saw several boxes each of Chaos Marines, Defilers, Rhinos, Raptors, and two boxes of terminators. Thats just off of the top of my head though.

Just make your army Renegade Militia so you can use both.

Forgeworld have free armylist for a Renegade Miltia list taht allows you to use CSM.

Go for chaos! I got lucky, got a a little over 1500 points of eldar dirt cheap from someone. I enjoy the new army and the style of gameplay. Chaos can be fun to play, if I were you I would sport a World Eater army. Sometimes with heavy emphasis on assault and bashing things with melee. Khorne for sure. Then when you have the time, make your IG army really shooty. So you get a fun spread of everything. Plus if you play World Eater you get to yell, "Blood for the blood god." How can you go wrong?
