So, I have decided to move into the Late War period of FoW. After asking around at the local store and looking thorugh a couple of books, I've settled on modeling the Panzer Lehr Division! At the moment, I am focused on finishing an army for the Tanksgiving event being held at the local store on Friday. The list will consists of the following:

HQ: 2x Panzer IVH
Platoon 1: 5x Panther
Platoon 2: 5x Panther
Platoon 3: 3x Panzer IVH
Artillery: 2x 10.5cm Guns

I am building the tanks from a standing start, and here is my P&M blog:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/410715.page

Now, obviously, this list isn't a very "serious" one. Longer-term, I'm looking to go for a Panzer Grenadier company rather than a Tank Company.

Well, I managed to get everything finished for tomorrow. Here is an overall shot of the company:

Just wondering how your list did if you had a chance to play it yet. Mostly because only two 105's seems a liitle rough considering you have to reroll all hits. With all those Panthers I might drop the PZ IV's all together and invest in more guns. Just an opinion from a fellow German player.

Well, I played two games last Friday, one against the British, and the other against the Soviets. I ended up wining the game against the Brits, and losing the one against the Soviets. Part of this was due to greater numbers on the Soviet side and poor dice rolling, not to mention my unfamiliarity with the game (these were games 3 & 4 for me!).

To be honest, the Panzer IVs and artillery were just there to fill out the last 500 or so points I had after taking 10 Panthers; I have the other two guns I needed to fill out the battery, but with it being TANKS-giving and all it didn't seem right to take fewer tanks in favor of more artillery . I'm working on a more "serious" list at the moment, one that will incorporate some grenadiers and AA as well.

Got ya. You really can drop those Pz IV's and find way better uses for 500 points. Infantry is great for supporting armor and AA is a pretty good use of only a few points. I take 2 10/5 AA half tracks in my list. Even if there is no air they are great for killing infantry in the open or threatening motars arty and such in the rear. Reckon is never a bad idea either. Helps to remove big AT guns that may be in ambush. As for all those Panthers. They will sure give your opponent something to think about. Nobody wants to see that many Panthers lol.

That there is a lot of kitties. I know I feel guilty trying to cram in 3-4 panthers in a regular list. Can't imagine biting the bullet and just going for a full 10.

Reminds me of the mid-war "Kursk" list from Eastern Front.

How many points total is that list?

I make it about 2485 points.

Exactly right, Exhumed . The local TANKS-giving event requirement was a 2500 point LW Tank Company, and this was my solution starting a couple of weeks out from a standing start (ie, all I had done was the two artillery pieces). If you would like to see some more pictures of the event, you can find them in my gallery here:

In the future, I don't expect I'll be playing at that high of a points value; from what I've been able to gather, 1,500-2000 is a common game size in my area.

Looks great Ruck. While rerolling on explosive shots is bad, just 2 10.5s are GREAT for smoke purposes! And if light tanks come close (like Stuarts, the like) firing over the sights will give them pause to come into that 24 inch range.

I have a friend who is loving his 2 Sextons for this exact purpose.

I figured about 2500. I'm going to have to disagree on using 2 10.5s for smoking purposes. If that's all you want then use Nebbies or mortars and you'll have even more points for things like AAA or Recon. This is just MHO and what has worked best for me in competative settings. When I take arty I spend the points to make it arty that will actually kill things. In the case of my Pioneers this is 3 Hummels. People tell me it's a waste of points until they see thier tanks go up in flames from across the table or they realize that a 2+ FP is pretty darn good. 1+ in direct fire. You think light tanks will reconsider getting close to 10.5s? No tank wants to get close to a 150mm lol.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying, Mr. Jody. The 10.5s had the advantage of being painted and ready to go, though (with the exception of the half-track), which was a major consideration for me as I had 15 tanks to assemble & paint in 2 weeks ! I'm planning on incorporating some mortars into the revised list I'm working on. I'm not sure about arty yet; I might include the whole battery of 10.5s, or I might go the Hummel route . I'm hoping to get a couple of example lists together and posted in the next day or so.

Ruckdog, I love it. I have 15 Panthers sitting around and I really need to finish them, but I always go "They are very expensive in points...." and end up buying another Tiger 1E instead :(..

Hey guys! Sorry it took me so long to circle back around to this. Here is a more balanced 2k list I am playing around with at the moment:

HQ:

2x Panther w/ Bergepanther - 390

Combat Platoons

Panther Lehr Platoon (x3 Panthers) - 560

Panzer Lehr Platoon (x3 Panzer IV) - 285

Weapons Platoons

Panzer Lehr AA Platoon (x3 Flakpanzer 38t) - 120

Divisional Support

Panzergrenadier Platoon (3x squads) - 280

Puma Lehr Platoon (3 Pumas) - 150

Motorized Arillery Lehr (4x 10.5 cm) - 210

Total: 1995

So, what do you guys think? Overall, I'm looking to work towards a Tank list with Grenadier support, eventually transitioning to something more like a Grenadier list with Tank support .

Looks good to me. If you know you'll be defending, what about taking some anit-tank guns instead of the pumas for ambush shenanigans?

Puma's are nifty, as they can shoot up infantry with Machine gun fire and also smash lighter vehicles as they sport larger guns too. Nice choice, at 150 (Book Dependant) they aren't bad at all.

They're also Recon, and have Jeep mobility instead of wheeled, and actually have some armor.

This makes them quite useful as recon when fighting against infantry. Use them to lift gone to ground, but don't use the gun so you can get the recon's Cautious Movement whenever there are other tanks around.

Oh forgot to say, Ruckdog put up an Army Profile on the Flames of War section of this site. Check out mine in my sig, if you need a hand let me know.

Thanks for the reminder, MWN. I will try to get one put together in the next few days or so. I will have some new additions to post about soon, as the wife made sure there were plenty of FoW goodies under the Christmas tree .

Damn you sir, with your considerate wife! (kidding) I asked for a pair of Grille's and added it to my joint Amazon Wishlist for the wife, needless to say I ended up with Kitchen implements......

Anyway I have Cash so will buy them myself, have a BZ Christmas.

EDIT found this on FOW website....it's funny but I hope that's not an SS tank he's ridin'.

IIRC the SS used anything and everything they could get their hands on. The SS used it but, so did the Heer, and the Russians when they captured them.

I was approaching this more from the angle of "The ultimate embodiment of Joy and Happiness, riding with the SS, one of the most racist, brutal and nastiest groups ever to existed." Not from the "Why are the SS using Tigers", which of course they did.
