Switching up from nids, I've been working on a Chaos army for the last while. While I was learning and improving my nid playstyle, I was purchasing, painting, and learning the Chaos handbook. Now, I think I have enough to atleast play around with for awhile. However, as I have no yet played Chaos (Versing or using) I have little idea how to play it. So if I could get some help on some good army lists with what I have. Competitive or otherwise, it will be awhile before I can do tournaments again, but having the lists is nice still.

HQ

Kharn the Betrayer - 1
Chaos Lord (OOP Model) - 2
Daemon Prince (OOP model) - 1
Lucius the Eternal (Not really, I've been proxying a Finecast Dark Eldar Succubus.) - 1

Elite

Chaos Terminators (OOP Models) - 5
Possessed Chaos Marines - 5
Chaos Dreadnaught - 1

Troops

Chaos Space Marines - 39
(Magnetized parts for Plague Marine conversions) - 20
Khorn Berserkers - 8

Vehicles

Chaos Rhino - 3
Defiler - 1

Daemon

Lesser Daemon - 10

Run and equip like SM; meltaguns & Pfists. Plague Marines don't need to be full tens as their resiliency holds at 7 or 8 guys.

You have enough CSM to run a meltagun heavy Chosen unit with Outflank. This is a mixed reviewed unit, mostly given the vagaries of Outflanking.

Go with Kharne and a WarpTime-Nurgle DP for HQs.

GreaterDs suck as they cost the same as a DP, but don't have the Armor Save (GD's cost plus an Aspiring Champion).

Dreadnoughts are simply fun. Paired with a defiler, both can be a big pain.

LesserDs? In friendly settings, not RTTs.

A small unit of lesser daemons is the cheapest scoring unit in the Codex.

Their ability to assault the turn they deep strike is pretty helpful against some armies too.

They're not the worst unit in the book, not even close.

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

No game of chess can be won without pawns, and this may prove to be a very long game.

SGD's do not suck. Getting them into position can be tricky, but being able to deliver a combat beast into your opponents lines and assault the turn he arrives is devastating. His 4+ inv save is better than the DP's (unless its tzeentch ones that cost 100 pts more), as is the weapon skill and toughness. The only armies he really suffers against are GK and DE - GK because its not eternal warrior so can be force weaponed (not that he can't by other force weapons, but other armies guys with force weapons would be lucky to wound him) and DE because of the 4+ poisned

You may have issues here as not everyone will let you play with the old metal models as they come on the smaller bases. You will probably have to purchase 5 bigger bases to use them on. In a friendly game it probably won't matter however so best check with the person you are playing.

Don't recall any restriction for using OOP models, maybe because i haven't been in any tourney or anything outside my LGS but last time i checked around if your model is GW official you are good to go, even if they have smaller bases than the actual ones, the common rule of you need to base it on the size it came from or bigger still applies as long as i recall might be wrong thou. And anyway termies sadly suck, unless made into a termicide squad, cruel fate for the CSM badasses.

Regarding your list i'd go with:

HQ

Kharn
Nurgle Daemon Prince with Wings and warptime (Personally i don't like lash)

Elite

3 Termies - 2combi-meltas, 1 RA, 2 Power fist (RA & PF, PF & Combi, PW & Combi) So that you can allocate all invuls on a single model)

Troops

10 CSM w/Champion & Power Weapon (Hopefully your GD will spawn here, the power sword is only for him to hold his own in the case that the reserve rolls aren't on your side), IoCG, 2 Meltas on a Rhino w/Combi-melta

9 Plague Marines w/Champion & Power Fist Personal Icon, 2 Plasmaguns

9 Plague Marines w/Champion & Power Fist Personal Icon, 2 Meltas on a Rhino w/combi-melta

8 Zerks w/Champion & Power Fist Personal Icon on a Rhino w/Combi-melta

10 lesser Daemons (Maybe in squads of 5 for objectives, on my personal experience that the only thing they are good at and maybe taking on real bad CC units, like guardsmen or tau, so i would probably go with 2 of 5 and have them the whole game sitting on cover at an objective, unless i want to delay something from shooting or advancing, like charging a squad of longfangs as soon as they enter the table)

Heavy

Defiler 2 CCWs

I thank everyone for the lists. Currently doing some weaving to find a list I like.

As for models and base sizes, If it becomes an issue I'll just put the larger bases underneath the smaller bases and live with it. My Daemon Prince came on a fantasy base for... I'd guess a medium sized something. The base it is on is not large sized, as a MC would use. But the model is pop, and looks awesome, so I'm just going to glue it to a large base, and decorate it with skulls and corpses. So long as a shot/template reaches the base it's on, that's all that matters. (Atleast to me)
