Sup guys, I finally got my hands on the last models for my IG army and wanted to share my list with you, this one isn't for tourneys or anything, just to have a fun game and move away from my power armor overcosted chaos marines. However i'd like for it to put some challenge and not just get steamrolled by any other list.
Also i'm in the old IG dillema of Colossus vs Medusa, and looking at my list you might help me see what would help me more out in the games, so here it is my 2k points:
HQ
CCS - Regimental Standard, Vox, Med-pack, Melta, Carapace Armour, Bodyguard & Colonel Straken /Chimera
Lord Commissar - Power Fist Carapace Armour
Elite
PBS - 9 psykers /Chimera
5 Ratlings
Troops
Veterans - Bastone, 3 Meltas, Heavy Bolter, Grenadiers /Chimera
PCS - Power Fist, Vox, 3 Plasmaguns
Infrantry Squad - Commissar w/Power Weapon, Sargent with Power Fist, Grenade Launcher, Vox, Heavy Bolter
Infrantry Squad - Commissar w/Power Weapon, Sargent with Power Weapon, Grenade Launcher, Vox, Heavy Bolter
Heavy Weapon Squad - 3 Lascannons
Heavy
2 Leman Russ - Heavy Bolter Sponsons and Lascannon
Colossus - Enclosed Crew Compartment
Manticore
Total: 2000
I'm not sure about the heavy bolter with the veterans, just got in there for wound allocations and for some weird situation it could be useful, and definetly not sure about the Colossus.

Guarding Guardian
|
My advice is more infantry. One of the strengths of the guard is in their large number of infantry (others being ready availability of heavy/special weapons and tanks), the tradeoff is these infantry are mediocre and prone to dying when they get shot. As a result you need more of them and should think twice before sinking too many points in to any one squad, such as the CCS or those infantry squads. They've got a giant stack of upgrades which help them last longer or dish out more pain, specifically in close combat, but the longevity comes at a huge point cost (carapace armor and commissars), and getting in to assault isn't really something that IG are good enough at to warrant power weapons/fists. Sure, it's nice to wail on that chaos marine and not have to deal with the 3+ armor save, but you already have to deal with lower initiative, lower weapon skill, and on the sword at least poor roll to wound.
I'd say pare down the squads.
*The CCS: toss a few of those upgrades: for the cost of just a few of them you can get a whole additional infantry squad.
*Infantry squads: toss the Commissars, or at least pull their power weapons (I must admit I like their additional leadership). If you've got a Lord Commissar, do you need the individual ones (due to his leadership bubble and proper placement)? Pick either the Lord or the regulars. Also get more of them (the infantry squads), lots more. That means more wounds, more lasguns, and most of all more heavy weapons.
*Veterans: What's their role in all this? Will they be rolling around in their Chimera popping vehicles and marines? If so, I think Bastonne is a good choice (I can see some vile combos with that), but do they really need carapace armor with the tank in between them and the enemy? Secondly, the heavy bolter may be cheap, but it has the opposite role to those meltaguns (it's anti-horde) and can't be fired while moving anyway (which you'll want to do a lot of to get those meltas in range).
*Psykers: What will they be doing? That's a big unit of them, which means totally obnoxious Soulstorms or leadership-crippling Weaken Resolves (or both). Mobility is important for either (so the Chimera is a good choice), just decide what you want them to be doing in any particular game early on and protect them, because they can be a pretty effective point sink if they wander the battlefield aimless or take a couple of missiles in first turn shooting.

You need to drop probably 75% of every upgrade you have. Guard is all about model count, whether in vehicles or in bodies.
That said, here's what I'd drop.
-No standard on the CCS; it doesn't do anything other than look cool...but its in a chimera.
-No voxes; they're just unnecessary 95% of the time and the points are better spent elsewhere.
-No carapace; 4+ armour isn't good, and its expensive for very little gain in survivability
-Straken in a mostly mech list is not worth his points, drop him and the bodyguard
-The med-pack is prohibitively expensive for 5 T3 models; drop it.
-5 ratlings won't do anything and are taking up points; I'd drop them
-Lord Commissar is really only useful for baby-sitting HWS, Ogryns, and giving stealth to 50 guardsmen; I'd drop him.
-Bastonne is very expensive for very little gain, I'd drop him
-If you're going to take a heavy weapon, make it an autocannon
-Drop grenadiers; see my reasoning for the CCS
-Drop one of the commissars and blob the two squads together
-Sergeants can't take power fists in infantry squads, make it a power weapon, and switch the heavy bolters to autocannons, drop voxes
-Drop the fist on the PCS, 5 T3 models are going to die swiftly in combat and before you can even swing.
-Drop enclosed compartment on the colossus.
That nets a grand total of...505pts.
Nothing in your list has changed in any significant way, but you now have 505pts to spend on more units.
Now onto the suggestions.
Squadrons are bad. I'd only take one leman russ. I'm also of the philosophy that your heavy slots should be all russes or all artillery, for redundancy. Mostly minor, but I'd seriously recommend dropping that russ.
With the 505pts, I'd recommend buying another melta vet squad (155pts, 165 with an autocannon in a chimera), getting another infantry squad with GL/AC and power weapon sergeant (75pts), beefing up your blob to 30 dudes. You're left with 265pts after that, which can buy two vendettas if you so wish. If you drop the russ, you could get three and still have leftover change.
Food for thought. With Guard, you don't want a lot of upgrades.

Thx for the response guys, looks like i'll have to play 1500 points only for now. I knew something was wrong when my IG army had slightly more models than my CSM list. Besides 3 Vendettas sounds like fun, to bad it'll be a while till i can afford the 3 of them, got caught on the tendrils of fantasy :(
