Perhaps something relating to Necromunda?

If it is, then it would obviously be the chapter; I doubt a gang could last for ~500 years.

No, there is a real life gang that calls themselves the Red Scorpions.

I think it would be pretty fethed up if GW named the chapter after them.

In that case, wern't the Red Scorpions Chapter introduced sometime in 2007?

So that would mean that they share a name with the gang; common coincidence.

Gang culture is generally not what many companies look to for designing stories about defenders of humanity, or at least that's what I tend to find.

Yes but you have to wonder. "Red Scorpions" isn't a terribly instinctive name for a military organisation imho and GW does draw from a wide range of sources. I'm far from being a GW hater looking to fling mud at the company, but I still wouldn't put it past them.

I suppose it's always a possibility but I don't think it'll ever be elaborated on, you may be making links which don't exist.

Keep in mind many Chapters do regularly recruit from a Hive worlds local hive gangs (assuming a hive world is a recruitment world for them). For example, Imperial Fists are allowed to take recruits from hive gang members on Necromunda.
That being said, a tenuous link between a real-life gang named the Red Scorpions and a 40k Space Marine Chapter called the Red Scorpions is a pretty damn weak link in my opinion. All they share is the name, which in itself isnt enough to mean anything. All it is is a "colour" + "fierce animal/creature", combined. I mean, "Pink Ladybugs" isnt gonna scare anyone, so that really limits the range of colours and animals/creatures to particularly fearsome or scary ones.

Furthermore, look at all the other Chapter names out there. Are you going to assume they're all some sort of weak link or homage to something else? Good luck figuring them all out

Not entirely true. The original back story for the Space Marines (before they "recruited as children and genetically modified") were that they were recruited from hive gangs and feral worlds.

That said, I imagine a small potatoes gang in British Colombia is probably outside the awareness of a bunch of nerdy game designers in the UK. I mean, I live thousands of miles closer to BC, and I had never heard of them until this thread.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Red Scorpions were around in Rogue Trader, so the late 80's. So if the gang didn't exist then, GW did it first.
