I had always though LoS was literally from the eyes or gun of your guy to whatever the target was and if anything was in the way the view was obstructed resulting in either a cover save or not being able to target the enemy. Now I thought this included friendly units, but someone at our FLGS who has been playing way longer than me corrected me and said that you can fire through your own units and essentially the only thing that blocks LoS totally is impassable terrain and vehicles. Can anyone tell me exactly how is correct to determine LoS? Can you fire through separate friendly units?

that's a misunderstanding. LoS is checked with anything that is in the way, be it frend or foe, vehicle or infantry, also any kind of terrain.

The only exception or for other models from the unit in which the LoS of the model that is fired is being checked. BRB pg16 right column of text

Example: My shootas are shotting at a squad of tac marine, the front row has full LoS without anything in the way. The 2nd row can see threw the 1st row.

How ever, if my squad of Killa kans is in front of the shootas, the marines will get a 4+ cover save since I am shooting threw another unit.

EDIT: yeah, you have to be as close as you can from the eyes of the model/barrel of a gun for vehicles

Note that last edition, friendly infantry didn't block LOS.

These days, if it's in the way, it blocks LOS.

you can fire through your own Unit, not Units, important difference.

As serder said, you can fire through your own unit as if it did not block LoS. Meaning members of the firing unit are ignored for LoS purposes.

Other units block LoS as normal.
