Hi, this is my first post to the forums and I already apologise for my bad english. It has been a while since I last played 40k (I only have necron army) and I am trying to figure out how the monoliths work (I realy don't reamember rules such as heavy vehicles and so on from the 5th edition rule book, since mine is some where under the stuff pile in my closet), I want to see if I have to buy some new heavy support or are the monoliths still viable. I have bought the new necron codex, and it seems that the gauss flux arc is now assault 3, particle wip can be destroyed via weapon destroyed result, and deepstrike misshap can occur. There is also a new weapon, the portal. So can I shoot all of my weapons at the same turn (I only have to decide how to use the portal) or can I only shoot ne heavy weapon?

What do you think, are monoliths still viable for necrons to use since there is also stuff like Doom Arks?

At the moment, people seem to be caught up going "SHINY STUFF, BUY AND USE" and monoliths are getting disregarded. Monoliths definitely still have a place.

Check the apoc data sheets at the GW site. Monoliths are incredbily important to Necron armies. They can still make big messes on the battlefield. The new vehicle choices only reinforce the point made by the Monoliths months ago.

I love the smell of cordite in the morning.

They also have tactical benefits, especially for objective grabbing. Clear away the enemy squad with some heavy firepower and then bring in a squad of Warriors/Immortals through the portal to take the objective. The squad doesn't even have to be in reserve!

With the ablility to DS into play and immediately drop a template onto whatever is needed, they are extremely good.

I've been using them in all my lists, and they do what they are supposed to, scare enemies and act as a portal to enemies rear lines.

Hi
YES NECONS NEED MONOLITHS. monoliths were just upgraded, and have eternity gate. if it hist on a 6, the entire squad that you were aiming at goes... Poof. if you get a 3, 4, or 5, they are all relocated anywhere on the board that you would like.

GO NECRONS

welcome to Dakka Dakka

Monoliths are still viable. Some abilities are nerfed and some are boosted with some new cool stuff. In nutshell, they are great for mobility, close-range fire support, or leading a spearhead.
By the way Particle Whip is an Ordnance Weapon. Therefore if you use it, you can't shoot with anything else (including the Portal of Exile (treated as a shooting attack)).

Necrons Codex, page 47
Eternity gate: D6 range. All enemy modes in range and have a line of sight to the portal, must pass a strength test. If they fail, they are removed as casualties with no saves allowed.

I play 3 monoliths. cheapest armor 14 vehicle in the game? sure! unlimited range teleport? sure!

my first game the new monoliths did great VS space wolves. (I won the game)

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

It is still a working toy as many say. Just keep it out of melta range or it goes pufff, (droppod + melta sucks)
I have yet to play it where I have got real value for the points, but I sure will sometime.

On another note, my mvp of most games have been an annihalation barge.

I have a question about the monolith - can it shoot and teleport people the turn it arrives from reserve via deep strike? I suspect not because the portal has to be used at the start of the movement phase which is the same time the monolith is arriving by deep strike and counts as moving at cruising speed when arriving by deep strike so can't shoot. How do others interpret this situation? I guess this is the one time you ignore the "heavy" special rule?

DS occurs before movement phase IIRC so :
DS monolith ( it MUST DS if in reserve) --> portal a unit during movement --> shoot particle whip when shooting ( the new heavy rule allows it to shoot as if it has not moved, )

I've used this several times already with a lychguard/HQ semi-death star and it work out rather well, assuming you don't mishap.

A Deep Striking Monolith:
- Can't teleport an unit because it isn't on the table at the start of the movement phase. BRB page 95, "...roll for arrival of these units as specified in the rules for reserves...". BRB page 94 "At the start of each of his movement phases, except the first..."
- Can shoot as remained stationary at the shooting phase. At shooting phase Monolith counts as remained stationary as Heavy* rule states.

I wasn't sure if the shooting rule applied as the monolith has travelled more than 6 inches when it deep striked (counts as 12") and so has already broken the "heavy" rule. If people think it is ok to shoot with it still then ok. Is it right that you can shoot with the particle whip OR the gauss array but not both?

Ordnance can't be fired along side other weapons. It's either flux and gate or the whip.

regular portal ( from reserve/ VoD style) doens't count as a shooting attack, so you can still particle whip after, just not particle whip + eternity gate.

They'll be the second vehicle I purchase, right behind the Command Barge I'm mainly getting because it has a free overlord which essentially halves it's price.

They're just so sexy!

Ok? I don't see why you bring that up.
