I am not the most knowledgeable about marines. I know that the armor they wear has improved and changed, but have Land Raiders been innovated and redesigned too?

I was wondering if anyone had any info on past versions of the land raider and when chronologically they were used.

Thanks.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

The Land Raider Redeemer was a new design, I believe. First was Godhammer, I know that.

HIDING IN METAL BAWKSES!

There is a few designs. The Redeemer, Crusader, Prometheus, Helios, and the original Godhammer. There may be a few others though.
The Prometheus is a command vehicle.
Helios has Whirlwind launchers if I remember correctly.

Though, that is out of the new ones. FW sells a version of the previous LR design.

I'd say whenever a piece of wargear or vehicle carries a "Mk" in its name, its safe to assume there were multiple variants built.
Most likely the Mk1 is either from the Dark age or the Great Crusade. Anything afterwards may range from Pre-heresy to M41.

Land Raider Mk1 and Mk2 have kits from Forgeworld, thus looking up the background stories there could help.

In 3rd ed, Index astartes, the Land Raider was rediscovered in the librarium omnis at Mars by Arkham Land and called 'Land' Raider to honor him....
The Land Raider was based in this series of articles of a STC template and first used in the great crusade. Spread across the forces of man,
given to Astartes and imperial army alike, the Land Raider became a common sight. A forgeworld was dedicated to produce these vehicles.
But thats the time when the Land Raider was just the 'phobos' variant. The other were added in codices later.

Actually:

Land Raider Proteus / FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/LAND-RAIDER-PROTEUS.html ( ancient predeccessor )

Land Raider Achilles / FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/LAND-RAIDER-ACHILLES-COMPLETE-KIT.html

Land Raider Phobos / GW: ( original setup )

Land Raider Crusader / GW: ( variant created by the Black Templars )

Land Raider Redeemer / GW: ( another variant of the crusader, added in 5th ed )

Land Raider Prometheus / FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/LAND_RAIDER_PROMETHEUS_COMPLETE_KIT.html

Land Raider Helios / FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/LAND-RAIDER-HELIOS-COMPLETE-KIT.html

Land Raider Ares / GW: ( Dark Angels )

Land Raider Terminus ultra / GW: ( created for Apoc and sold as LR plus additional sprues by GW. )

Redeemer and crusader are the most recent variants added. Others seem to be rare and / or older.

Linked to 2 languages because the english article lacks the pics of the land Raider models Mk 1 - Mk 3 the German article has.
And pics shouldn't be a problem to identify who is who.

Thanks a bunch.

In short though as the links didn't quite answer it, was the MKIII (standard version sold by GW) used at the time of the Heresy?

The CSM have the same kit just with additional spiky sprues.
So Mk 3 should be available to all Legions in order to take this type with them on this "tactical withdrawal"...after they failed at Terra.

That is an incredibly logical solution to my question. Thank you very much sir!

Land Raiders won't change all that dramatically as Chapter Tech Marines follow the Adeptus Mechanicus ideals when it comes to innovation (or lack thereof).

All the newer varients are just differing weapon loadouts on the basic MkIII pattern.

the only Landraiders that are distinctly different from the modern land raider would be Land Raider Achilles and the earlier MkI and MkII.

Crusaders, Phobos, and Redeemers are simply the same hull with different weapons in the hard points.

I like the idea behind the ares, but what in gods name is the point of having twin linked flamers?

Another note, the Red Scorpions invented the Helios (wanted artillery and didn't want to rely on light tanks or Guard), along the same lines of the Black Templars inventing the Crusader.

Apologies if this ends in a double post, but the quick reply post never showed up on the thread (so far).

I missed Apocalypse and all the articles that came out about it and would like to have an Ares in my army.

Was there or is there still an article on modelling it?

Thanks in advance.

*edit*

"Adolescent Youth...."?!?

I'm 4......ummm, NOT an Adolescent.

Well, in behavior maybe, but as I tell everyone, "Time is MAKING me grow OLD, NOTHING can make me grow UP!!"

Thanks Kronk. I have the data sheet.
I was looking for an article on 'building' the model, I know a Land Raider (duh) and Vindicator are needed, but how was the front mount done? The Siege Shield hides the details in the picture and where did the Heavy Flamers come from? I assume Baal Predators?
I have Crimson Fists so I don't have any Baal Predators. I assume the sprue is available from GW, correct?

Thanks again.
